___Load for 45 Birdhead

Hey Guys____Would Winchesters  Silvertips 225Gr. H.P. be adequate as a defense load for Blk.Bears (225-400lb) in the Pacific Northwest, got some at gun show. They will be used in a Ruger Vaquero 45 bird head. I haven’t started loading yet so I’m looking for an over the counter load to be used in my ruger.____ THANKS BAYRUNNER

They would probably work fine but I'd much rather have a cast bullet of some kind. If I were to get into a situaton where the bear"needed" to be stopped, I'd want something that wouldn't just blowup or stop, if it hit bone first. 'Course this is just my opinion..others are guaranteed to be different.

wouldnt be in my gun. Id much prefer a hardcast swc or lfn at 250 grain or heavier at about 1000 fps out of that birdshead.

Those Winchester Silvertips have a muzzle velocity of around 800 or 900 fps don't they? That is not enough power to keep you alive if you are being attacked by a Black Bear. A 44 mag shooting a 240 JSP at 1300 fps is what I would consider the minimum protection from Black Bears. My little 357 has more potential for killing a bear that size than that 45 load does.

Yours might be a hard find since you are not reloading yet and looking for factory ammo.
The Max load for even Cor-bon "that I could find" was only a...
200gr@1,100 and was still listed as a +P!
(Please research this as It was the best that I could find)

This protects them from liability isssues as only Ruger, FA, Colt anaconda, Dan wesson, or T/C
are rated for the loads that you really need in the .45 Colt

You might get lucky at another gunshow as a 250gr jacketed @ 1,300fps are not too uncommon
but you can be sure that they are marked Ruger Only.

I have never seen a black bear let alone shoot one. Might be ok but as PaulS pointed out, the above
loads could be considered as minium.

Plan "B" would be to have someone load some to Lloyds spec's for you if possible.

Two words.  Buffalo Bore, Grizzly.  Okay well thats three words, but you get the idea.  They both sell what you need for that 45 Colt Vaquero to handle black bears.

Don't forget the PMC +P+.  These heavy loads may be a bit painful in the birds-head configuration, but this is a non-issue if you have to shoot a bear out of your face.

You Got That Right! I've shot some of these hot loads with regular grips and with Pachmeyers and they're still quite a hand full ! Adrenaline can do some amazing things though. They oughta package that stuff for resell so we can practice like we'll be shooting ! HAHAHAHA
