browning blr

Do you think a browning blr rebarreled and chambered to 250 savage from 243 win. would feed reliably from the 243 mag. This is and early (pre 81) gun. Thanks, Byron

I would bet it would but I believe the BLR was made in 22-250 which would provide the perfect mag..  Still I must ask why the change?

I prefer the pre81 guns. Either jap or belgium. I don't think they were available in the 22-250. I know the 81 series guns were. Thanks, Byron

Is there a difference in the mags? I know there were changes but wasn't aware there were changes in the magazines..  Call Browning customer service and ask. They've been very helpful to me..

Gunnut, The early mags stick out of the bottom of the gun the 81 series as well as all later blr's are flush. I know the early jap mags will not always interchange with the belgium made guns. I do have 2 81 series guns but never tried their mags in and early gun. I will but don't see how they could work. Thanks, Byron

Have you tried feeding the 250's from the 243 mag? You may not be able to chamber them but it should at least feed them. The 250 Savage is quite a bit smaller than the 243 and detachable mags can be finicky feeders.. It should be possible to alter one to feed but I've not seen it done. Why change at all. The 243 offers some advantages and few disadvantages over the 250 sav. Perhaps a wildcat based on the 243/308 case?? If none of the above, custom work on the mag may be all there is..

The blr81 mags are wider than the pre 81 mags. I guess thats one reason the older guns feel better. The action is thinner. You are probably right the 243 would be the logical solution or the 25/308 wildcat ( don't remember the name).

The problem of course is most gun lunies arn't logical. I guess I will be happy with the 260 I had made on and early jap. blr. It only reguired a rebarrel & chamber from 308. Thanks, Byron  ;D

Well I certainly understand that reasoning.. and need truly has nothing to do with it!! The 250 could likely be made to feed from the 243 magazine and one could try it out by simply trying a few rounds. The 250 won't likely chamber but feeding could be acessed without too much trouble. If you decide to try it I would advise a spare magazine be converted first to assure success.
