Mod 57 8 3/8

I've been  lucky  enough to have been  given   a  New  Mod 57  with  and  8 3/8  barrel.. It  was  bought in  72   and never  fired  .( at least  till yesterday )  ;)..

What Id  like  to know is   the  value  of  this  gun .  It's not a seller  as  it  will now become  My   deer gun   here in  Kentucky..  Id   like to  get a  ball park idea of  the  value.  Its    blue   steel and has  all the papers    and presentation  box

I've seen them used on Gunbroker.com for around 400-450.

I had the chance to buy one in 1991 NIB for $189.  Passed on it to pay tuition >:(.  Stupid tuition!

Thanks  Mike  that was    about  what I   was  thinking,,but   there is  no  demand for   them  ,,,,,  To many think   the  44 is  the only  one  to  have .......  To bad   they dont know the  truth

With the presentation box, all the tools and the manual, and unfired, I've seen most go for $500 to $600 range.
I own four of them - one in 3" stainless, three in nickel, all in different lengths. It's a great caliber.

Yes  I got lucky to have a  friend like that   Shot a it  a  few time      now I've got to  get on the ball    and  find  some  loads   for it before  deer season  rolls  in .

Any  help here  would   be a  big help

The Model 57 is my Favorite big bore S&W revolver. That said I wouldn't even consider selling mine. They are TOO hard to Locate in good condition. Hammerdown

For a hunting load in a hurry go with H-110 and just about any bullet you want.  It works well with cast and jacketed bullets.  I like 22gr with the 230gr Keith bullet from Leadhead.  I'll get 1440fps with a 6.5" Backhawk.  This same 22gr works well with jacketed bullets from 200 to 220gr. 

I have found the higher loadings of H-110 are the most accurate with any bullets I have tried so far.  Good for hunting, not so good for high volume target shooting.  Try 8gr Unique with any bullet in the 200 to 220gr range for paper punching.  I use West Coast Bullets 210gr copper coated because they are available localy.

I have a "few" .41 Magnums many of them S&Ws. Just bought my first 8 3/8" gun but it is a stainless M657. Really shoots nicely.



Pick any good 210 grain JHP and put 22-23 grains of H110/WW296 behind it and there will be no deer left standing if you put the bullet where it belongs. 25-26 grains behind the Sierra 170 grain JHC is also a devestating round..and very low recoil.

If you don't have dies yet, try the Lee and get the Factory Crimp Die...they really work nice.
