The 25-20 vs the soda can!
« on: July 27, 2006, 05:54:13 AM »
A few months back I was tooling around at home and got to thinking about what fun could be had with shooting drink cans.
Now, knocking over empties is fine, although anything highpowered tends to punch straight through that thin aluminium.
So when I went out to hunt for small game on a farm later on I took a few full soda cans with me, some to drink and one to blast.  :)
But it wasn't going to be just hit a full can.
I could shoot jugs of water if I wanted to try that!
Nope, I thought, why not put all that explosive power inside to good effect.
So we placed it on a big log about 35yds from my truck which I leaned on for the shot, and as I walked toward the log I shook it hard the entire way.
If it wasn't fizzed up by the time we set it up for its short trip to oblivion it never would be!
My 25-20 Martini Cadet rifle flicks a 75gn Hollow Base FP @ about 2100fps so it wouldn't lose much speed at 35yds.
Much as I suspected it hit the can square in the middle.
The can detonated and leapt 6 feet to the left! :o
Talk about fun! ;D
Now I can't post a thread like this without a pic so here's a photo of the end product, a full can and the little round that inflicted so much hurt on an unassuming can of soda!  8)

Pretty cool, huh?
Perfect for recycling.  ;D
I might add that this has been repeated now to similar spectacular effect. ;)

Now what did that can ever do to you?

One of lifes simplest pleasures has got to be bouncing a (used to be) tin can.......I will admit I find a lot of pleasure in it as well......

Have you tried a .17HMR?  Mine gives similar results.......

Ya think that's something, I did a one gal paint can full of paint years ago! With a 160gr Speer in a 7mm Mag. The sides laid down perfectly flat with ni wrinkles. The top and bottom rings folded out flat with the sides, the lid shot about 40' into the air and there was one little perfect .284 dia hole right in the middle of what used to be a side!

We do it here with coffe can.

two of them

the bottom one filled with water and the lid popped back on it , the second one empty and sitting on the first,

When the bullet hits the full can the force pops its lid sending the second can into the air

good fun

You can also take an empy pop can and fill it with water and it will bust up too.

Try charcoal bricks.  Nice black cloud of "Poof"

We also took ziplock bags full of four.  "White Poof"

Back when I was a kid, every thing in town closed at noon on saturday.  Dad would always get a hair cut every saturday moring, and on his way into town he would drop me and a friend off at the city dump where we would spend a couple of hours shooting what ever looked interesing.  In those days a dump was just that, and as far as I remember it never really closed as there was no fence or gate......

Shot a lot of rats.......but glass bottles and jars have to be about the funnest thing to shoot.....as you always know if you hit them.....

Now days, the dump covers everything up about as fast as it get put there........and a kid would probably wind up in jail should he enter the dump when closed.......with a rifle in his hand......

And what rats there are, if any, are probably starving to death from lack of food.......the local dump here is a pretty clean operation......

The coolest thing I have ever seen in this regard, was a demonstration my dad put on for some classmates and me at our outdoor education classes years and years ago, when i was in 6th grade.

he put two paint cans full of water on top of each other with a 50-cent piece in between. he shot the bottom can with a .22-250 and the pressures caused the cans to rupture, and the lids to press together very very hard...you could read the lettering that got stamped into the lid by the coin. you could also identify the president and dates.

pretty cool huh?

damn sure made us think twice about pointing those rifles in any unsafe directions.

Good grief! I'm suprized there's an earth left. Sorta sounds like we killed everything! By the way, those Neceo (can't spell) candy waffers make neat 22 targets and the waste goes away with the first rain. Of course if you take your granddaughter with you, she'll eat the broken one's while you putting up new one's!

Glad you asked. " Pre" would be fine along with some ice, thank you. :)

Broken glass is not very friendly, althoug at the dunp it doesn't matter as much.  I still see people taking glass up into th emountains to shoot.  Much better is to spend $3 on a box of clay pigeons.  You can see them better, too.

I'm there about broken glass.
You can never clean it up completely and it really leaves a mess, especially if you like to plink as much as I do.
