I have 2 Encore 50 Cal's and I also have a Encore 45 cal. I am shooting 100 gr. or (2 Triple 7 pellets) under 195 gr. Barnes Expanders. My son used my 45 Cal last year and took to doe's at 25 and 50 yards, one shot kills. I have it sighted in 1 inch high at 100 yards and get 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups. Nothing wrong with a 45 Cal, the only thing you will find is, the 50 cal has a better selection of bullets and sabots.

The way I look at it is ask yourself how many deer, elk and bison have been killed with black powder loaded .45-70s in the last 130 yrs or so and they didn't have the great bullet selection we have today!! You can easily equal or exceed .45-70 trapdoor ballistics with a modern inline .45 cal, so I don't agree with the need for a .50 cal which will work just fine, too. Get the one you have confidence in, you'll be happy you did! :) I just happen to have a Black Diamond Super XR .45, been there with the .45 vs .50 debate!!

If you ever plan on hunting elk in Colorado or other state that have a .50 caliber minimum, you will want the .50. The .50 can shoot .50 cal full bore conicals or .45 &.40 cal bullets in a sabot but with the .45 you are limited to .40 cal saboted bullets or .45 cal full bore bullets. Just something to think about.
