retro bass tourny
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:25:24 AM »
Know what I would like to see..a retro bass tournament.  Old Garcia Ambassaduer 5000 reels ( the old red ones) and Garcia Conolon fiberglass rods...identical tackle boxes loaded with old standbys( Lucky 13, Shannon Spinner,Snagless Sally,Original Big O,etc.) given to each entrant..everyone issued identical tackle..lets see if some of these guys can catch fish the way our fathers and grandfathers did before everything was so high tech!!

I got the Cardinal 4 for my 14th birthday..My folks paid $34.00 for it, which in those days was quite a bit of money for a fishing reel..that was 33 years ago.  Wish I could find a spool..Also wish I put the purchase on a Cardinal 6 or 7.  You should see the prices they get for either of those on E-Bay!

Spinafish,

What kind of boats would folks have to use?  Would we be talking about those old 'Bomber" bass boats or strictly jon boats?  (In fact, I waiting for a fishing buddy to come by in a few minutes and we are heading out in an 1976 Sears 12 ft. alum. boat pushed by a 1964 Fisherman 5.5 Evinrude.  Believe it not, you can still catch fish with this rig!)

BTW, in terms of rod and reels, we all used Mitchell 300s on Shakespeare Wonderods.  I still use the 300 ocassionally.

Blessings!

yeah!  That makes me think of my grandfather's old boat..a really old Lone Star V-bottom that started off life as a rental boat..a home made trailer..and a really old Evinrude 18 h.p. motor.  He fished below Wilson Dam almost exclusively.. which meant the boat had an unbelieve amount of dents and abrasion marks where the boat had ridden up and down on the concrete of the dam..the boat had numerious coats of paint added through the years and with all the pock marks and such it looked camoflauged!  BUT...there is no way to calculate the amount of fish (head count or pounds) that was put into that boat!  A good thing about it, he could take it anywhere without worrying about scratching it up!!

Spinafish,

Yea, those old boats have served folks well.  I enjoy mine.  The 12 footer is light enough to put on a car so that I can get to those tough places were there are no ramps.  And I don't need a huge motor to push it around.  I love it!  I'm thinking the older I get the more I like to keep fishing simple.

Blessings!
