A big thrill from a single shot .22

I'm 60 and have been shooting for over 50 years, yet just last week I got about as much satisfaction as I could stand from an inexpensive single shot bolt action .22.  I gave my 10 year old nephew his first rifle - a new Savage Cub.  He loves it, takes pride in it, shoots it safely and accurately, and appreciates it.  It's really nice to see a good kid take a positive step in growing up and being responsible.  I really like that Cub as well.  It's built pretty nice - has aperature sights, but grooved for a scope (later - he needs to learn to shoot with sights first), it has the Accu-trigger, and is nicely finished for such an inexpensive rifle.  Fits him perfectly too.  He kept his first targets, marking his shots and "uncle's" too.  I believe he outshot me.  Anyway, it was a great day and thought I'd share the experience.

  That's GREAT!!!  We need all the young shooters we can get, and you should be proud of getting a new one on line and teaching him safety too!!!

That's terrefic, this is something that will stick in this young lads mind forever.  I'm a little older and still have my Rem. 510 that my Dad gave me when I was 8.  Come to think of it I've had it for almost 60 yrs.  I wish more relatives would be mentors to younger ones with firearms, not all yougsters are blessed with an Uncle like you.  Again congradulations.

My oldest grandson is 5......to young for shooting......but, grandpa did take him fishing on his last visit.......I understand the thrill you got, as it was the neatest thing to watch him catch his first fish.....the sparkle in his eye and the jumping up and down.....I think he also turned a few circles.........I think I got a bigger thrill than he did........because I'm sure it's one of those moments he'll never forget......and neither will I.......

Congrats! Always great to see new shooters joinging our ranks. Makes it even more special when its one generation passing along their knowledge to the next. A single shot .22LR is the absolute best way to introduce a young shooter to our sport. Simple to operate, you can teach the basics of gun safety quite easily without too many distractions and instead of spray and pray shooting, the act of having to load and eject each round will make for a much better marksman. I know it did in my case and I still have the Cooey Model 39 my grandfather gave me. I was pleased as punch a couple of years later when he presented me with the "fancy" Model 60 with the tube magazine for my birthday...and five isn't too young to learn about gun saftey and/or how to shoot. They already know how to pull a trigger from TV! My dad and grandfather started me at five and I turned out fine as did my brother.

Sounds liek fun.  I took my nephew to the range with me two weeks ago.  His Dad gave him a BB gun for his birthday a few months ago.  We took it and some targets with us when we were shooting the big guns.  he really felt like he was shootin' with the big boys.  Learned a lot about gun safety. 

I have a single shot marlin youth rifle on the way.  I am going to take him to the range again next time I get the chance and let him shoot it.  I will need to do some work to cut down the stock  to make it fit.  I saw  kid about a year older than my nephew who was shooting a 22 with the butt sticking out uf his underarm and thinking, man I do not want to do that to him.  hard enough to learn to shoot without having to hold a gun awkwardly.  I paid $55 bucks for the gun, so I do not mind doing a little chopping to make it fit. 

he was as excited about shooting ont he way home as he was on the way up there, and that was so worth it!

That will be an experience he will have for life!  I don't think there is much that is more fun than a .22.  I loved them as a kid, and now as one nearing middle age<VBG> I still have more fun with my .22s than with any other guns.  I always have at least one along when I go to the range.  And a couple years ago I bought a Stevens Favorite (a new one) that seems to make me happy to take it along when I go for a walk in the woods.  We always had one in the corner of the milk house when I was growing up, and it makes me feel young again for some reason.  Good job including your nephew in the shooting sports.

Took my 13 year old nephew out on his first shoot a couple of weeks ago. Started with a Daisy BB gun, moved up to a pump 22, then let him help me load and shoot a small black powder cannon. All he could say over and over was - "Awesome!"

I guess that meant he had fun. He never shot a gun other than in a video game before that day...
