45/70
« on: July 27, 2006, 08:07:12 PM »
The 45/70 seems to be quite popular.   I am thinking about getting another NEF rifle and would like to hear some opinions from others that either have a 45/70 or had one.

The rifle would see use for hunting deer here in Ky.  I would also handload for this cartridge.  I also thought about the 44 mag.

If someone were to ask you why you would recommend a 45/70 to someone what would be your reasons?

Also, if you had a 45/70 and didn't like it what were your reasons for this also.  Thanks

There is nothing NOT to like about the 45/70.They are about as much fun as you can legally have fully clothed.

The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

The Handi 45-70 is one of the "must have" calibers.  With factory 300gr loads the recoil is very tolerable, even from the bench. A fun gun to shoot and have.

The 44mag is excellent but as a reloader with a 45/70 you could duplicate this cartridge.
While having more possibilities from 150gr collar button to 500-600gr that kick so badly that we are happy not to own an express with another shot waiting for us!

A 45/70 enthusiast.

The 45-70 is a great barrel/rifle to shoot in a Handi...

EVOC ONE has it right , the 45/70 is a must have barrel for the handi . You can load it down to plunk with or go overboard with some of the high end stuff .

It has taken the spot of my favorite round to shoot .

using a vernier Long Range sight.

I've also tried some Rx7 and 4895 under the Postell at 600yds.  Don't remember details, but if it was bad ... I would.

It's a shooter for the price.  May want to consider the 38-55 barrel too.

John

First off the 45/70 can't be compared to the 44 mag. it out classes it in every respect. They are great in any rifle  i once had a 32"BC barrel and sold it to a friend it had great accuracy  as does my handi rifle . Super accurate  with factory winchester 300 's and even better with hornady 350's and you can go for some realy big stuff with the 430 and 460 hard cast bullets. Everyone should have one.
