What do you all think about the magnum trend?

Kombi, I think the rest of us have moved on from this 2-3 weeks ago. A person can look at this thread top to bottom & I think it has been covered. If you are comfortable with these rounds you mentioned, then I am happy for you.
And I and others have options that we like with reasons allready stated, so all is well I hope.

When debating a subject like this keep in mind that cartridges for hunting have not improved in over 100 years.  Almost all changes are done to sell products, nothing more.  Currently the gun writers are desk jockeys out of New York passing out crap provided by  manufactures.  Occasionally they will attend a "canned" hunt in a fenced in pasture and chalk this up as experience.  Have you noticed how they like to refer to each other as "Crusty?"  I have a safe full of guns which I guess makes me somewhat of a hypocrite, but I'm not "Crusty."  MY ADVICE:  Get a good rifle and stick with it.  Learn every aspect.  Learn to compensate for it's pluses and minuses.  IN your doltage you will be glad you did.  Ok, OK, if yo must know I hunt with a 6.5X55.

Here's my 2 cents.
Magnums are all well and good but it wasn't until the 1950s when they first started to appear in considerable numbers.
Sure, they can shoot further and faster and hit harder but human bodies aren't any different.
By and large we still have limitations on the amount of recoil we can absorb and to really utilise their power involves some serious optics........which then add more complications.
And just because it travels a long way doesn't mean it always does it ACCURATELY.
In all honesty most if not all game can be comfortably taken with non-magnums.
And let's remember, the 416 Rigby, 404 Jeffrey and 505 Gibbs aren't magnums.
But, if you shoot on the great plains then that flat trajectory is a big advantage.
Hold on a sec though.......doesn't the 25-06, 270 Win and 280 Rem have flat trajectories as do some of the Euro rounds like the 8x68 and 9.3x64 which are not magnums by definition.
So in all honesty I think it's a case of convenience and marketting rather than real world necessity.

I have a jap 300 wby.  I haven't shot it in a couple years. Last time it fired, a buddy of mine used it to kill two deer in a few seconds out in Del Rio.  One can imagine the great distances one might shoot a deer in Del Rio's vast expanses of canyons, draws, crags, plateaus....

turns out both deer were at 25 yards.
He congratulated me for the rifle "being dead on just like I told him".  the load was 82.0 gr RL22 and a 180 gr interlock. 
As far as the rifle goes, I do love a 26" barrel.   

Since I don't presently predict an oversupply of federal 215 primers flooding the market anytime soon, I don't think that rifle is going to the range anytime soon.

I do love to shoot it however, wrapping myself around it, remaining still, taking that breath, holding it, squeezing.....and here comes the thunder buddy.   
Just one more thing in my life that I get a rush from.
And the conclusion you can draw from this is:

I hunt deer in East Texas. the one I killed last november weighed 135 lb gutted, not too bad, but the 7mm-08 hammered the sucker more than adequately at 200 yds.
If I'm ever lucky enough to go Nilgai hunting, or elk hunting etc...why the heck would I take a (.260, .308, 7mm-08)?

what and how ya hunt determines your gun . big , tuff , mean or a combination of the three might mean a 458 WM class rifle . Not all in the class are mags. but do the same thing . Long range thin skined animals 7mm or 300 Wm class lots of non mags will work 30-06 for one . Ground hogs at 400 yards 2506 rem or 264 WM could either work ?
It seems in many cases rounds invented years ago worked well . The guns that shot them are not strong enough to take some powder bullet combos so we get up grades in metal and anew round comes out . Then some try to get a short round to stiffen the action or loose weight .
One thing is for sure if you introduce a new round and don't call it a mag alot of people will think it inferior to existing mags.

Yesterday i picked up a magazine on the 22 RF . there was a story about some writer saying if he could only have one gun it would be a 22RF . He gace an example of a forest ranger friend running into a black bear at spitting distance and killing it with a 22 RF Buckmark pistol .
Hope the wife dose not see it or I'll never get another mag.

Since this has become active again, I'll throw in my 1 1/2 cents.  I have had several 7 Mags, used 300 Win and Weatherbys on game and live in Montana where shots can be long.  The only centerfire mag rifle cartridge I own now is the 257 Weatherby.  Always wanted one and got it.  Haven't done anything with it but zero it.  I use my 280's, 7mm-08's, 35 Rem's or pistol cartridges alot in rifles.  At the age of 56 (damn, how did that happen) I have yet to take an animal that would have been dead quicker with a Mag, or not taken an animal that I could have with a Mag.  Shoot what ya want, I do.  Including blackpowder guns, I am pushing 100 plus guns, so I guess the ratio is 100 to 1, tells ya what I prefer.  DP

I agree with dpe... I only have one what is called a magnum; a M-70 300 Win Mag.  Nice, especially with the Super Grade stock it wears, but I've only killed one deer with it...    And then I had it loaded down to 2900 fps w/a 150 gr. bullet...

  Yes,I agree that a lot of us have gone magnum crazy but what could it hurt if one can shoot it accurately? I think the "magnum" craze really started with the 7mm Rem. and really hasn't abated since. I do think something like the 300 weatherby or 300 RUM is a but much for deer but us boys like toys,right? For big feral hogs I use a 458 Win. and for elk I prefer a 8MM Rem.Mag even though I own several 06's that would do the job just fine. Am I a victim of the "craze"? Well,maybe but what's a gun nut to do after owning the standard,completely adequate calibers? I'll tell you,it's time to play around with something different! It's all about fun and diversity but I must admit a poor shot with a magnum will still be a poor shot.  Kix

I have2 mags,a 375 H&H and a 7x61 Sharpe and hart that I built.Spent the last half dozen years regressing'I now have a 9.3x57 7x57 8x57 and a 336 in 32 spl.I have had both Norma mags which were fine rifles,300 H&H and some I have forgotten about. As I get older,I,m attracted to the old obsolete stuff. Gonna find out how the 9.3 works on elk this year. Should be dandy

OK , I  confess i like mags and they do things other guns in their class can't do . I really like my 17 hmr and 22 mag.
They really do fill a gap .

i own 2 7 mags one ruger number one and one encore pro hunter but by far my favorite magnum round is the 22 magnum haha
