Yep, shot a few goats,  Jacobs 1, Mouflon/corsican 3, Merino 1, and New Zeland Billie 1.   All but the Jacobs were handgun harvests.   They make decent sausage when mixed with pork.

Y'know markc....y'right.  Sausage it is, that would work.  BUT...I shot a big corsican sheep...stunk so bad the ranch owner wanted it out of his walk in.  Shot a couple of merino sheep,a Tx dahl and a black hawaiian as well...same deal....the mounts still have an odor.  I didn't eat the jacobs....can't remember why,  it's been awhile.  Ate my mouflon sheep, not bad.  Actually.....I am fix'n to get a smoker and a dehydrater...had some wonderful pronghorn done that way and in my mind, they are the worst tasting....just like goat.   ;D

.308.....Shoot a hog.  Eats right up to the oink.  Sheep and goats are for mounting in my mind!!

Another thought....if you want to get something to eat, see if they have a red deer hind.  Usually they are well under $800 and will give you 100lbs of meat or more.

Hey Doug,  I was hunting cheap sheep one time when a more well to do hunter came in from another property owned or leased by the same rancher.  He and a guide had hunted all day and finally got a shot at a large red deer.  Wow!  That thing looked like an elk.  Not sure what that cost him as it was a nice size buck/bull?   Can't recall what they called him.

I find that feral hogs also stink a good bit at times, but like you said are good eating right up to the oink.   We just soaked and bled out the sheep quarters like we do hogs and they were pretty decent eating, especially when smoked slowly...    My wife and I have been considering a red deer hunt some time after the upcoming whitetail season.  Buying land might put an end to those dreams for a while.  We also want to do a black bear hunt, elk, mountain lion etc..   All we really need is a rich relative to leave us a small fortune...   ;D

Shot a Catalina goat once.  It smelled pretty bad - and tasted just like it smelled.  Only game I've taken that I didn't eat.

Hi All,

.308sniper...a fallow doe works....fabulous meat.  Going to the Brady Ranch next August and they trade doe meat for that of a buck.  May take them up on this.

Mark...Male red deer are called stags and they come at all kinds of prices.  Really big ones can be obscene.  I was contacted by a ranch owner that had a 12x12 for 12k.  I don't think so.  Usually you can get a spike or 3 point for 1k, 4x4 5x5 for 2k and weak or spindly 6x6 or7x7's for $3,500.  Any really mature 7x7 with big genetics will be about 5k.  Many times you can deal.  I got my 9x8 for a heck of a lot less than that.

Overall...I once shot a large merino sheep and sat with the butcher to talk about cuts of meat.  He asked, "do you like lamb?"  I replied, "I love lamb!"  "Too bad" he said, "this won't taste like lamb." He asked, " do you like mutton?"  I replied, No... I hate mutton!"  "Oh..too bad"  he said, "cause this'll taste like old mutton."

drdougrx, when we took out Axis buck's, we got the meat trade from at Brady ranch. But they also butcher the bucks and package them up for resale also. So you may get some meat from a buck or doe. It does not matter though, it all is some of the best tasting meat I have ever eaten. The reason they do the meat trade is, they have meat already frozen in the coolers and you get to take it home frozen and don't have to wait for your deer to get processed. I am looking forward to going back one of these days.

We got up to tioga friday evening and ate dinner. At about 8:00 we headed out I wanted to shoot a fallow doe so we set out for her.  Our guid put us in a stand for a drive we saw 2 groups but did not get a good shot and the drivers knew where  the were bedded up.  I was put by a stump and they drove through a ravine and I think we saw 150 does run by before one stopped in my shooting lane.  I shot and she dropped and rolled.  The gutted her and took her back.  The othe 2 groups of hunters shot 3 pigs total. We ate a nice lunch and headed back out to get dad a ram.  We were out for 5 min and dad sees one he likes he shoots it and it drops.  Total hunt time 10 min. We came back to camp and the other group shot a spanish goat.  Here are  some pics.

They smell bad because they pee all over themselves.  Much like a whitetail takes a leak over his hocks (tarsal glands) in rut time.  It doesn't effect the meat, just the hair...

Really?  Thats wierd.  We've never had that experience with the meat ahving a strong smell.  We did bleed em out on ice like we do feral hogs, so maybe that makes the difference...?
My smoke house project is almost complete.  Maybe a sheep hunt is in order, smoked sheep sausage anyone?    :P
