Western Auto Supply 30-30

My old man has a 30-30 sold by western auto supply and the model is revelation.  It looks a lot like a marlin, in fact I cannot find any differences.  Is it in fact a marlin?  It is currently equiped with an old weaver scope and bases.  I would like to give it an upgrade.

This is a cross reference for house brands and is pretty complete. Someone recently gave me a Foremost (JC Penney) that was made by Marlin. Had to work on the loading spring/gate some, but now shoots great.

I bought my 30-30 carbine in Lusk, Wyoming at the Western Auto Store there.  New it cost me $129.00!  Mine is stamped Glenfield 30GT.

Both Winchester and Marlin made "private label" leverguns for several different retailers.  Every bit as good as the name brand; enjoy it!

I have a Revelation Model 200 in 30-30.  Even though it doesn't say "Marlin" anywhere that I can see, it is a Marlin through and through.

Earlier this summer I took some handloads and four different boxes of factory ammo to the range.  I used some of the handloads to foul the barrel and check the scope, a Leupold Rifleman 2-7X33 set on 4-power.  I fired one five shot group of reloads and a three-shot group of each factory ammo from the bench at 100 yds.

Handloads, 5-shot group:
30.7 gr. Re15 170 Hdy. FP  1.655"

Factory 3-shot groups:
Winchester Western 170 gr. PowerPoint  0.822"
Federal Fusion 170 gr.  1.088"
Federal Nosler Partition 170 gr.  0.838"
Hornady LeverEvolution 160 gr.  0.797"
Average for four factory ammo groups  0.886"

I expect this is the best $200 rifle I will ever own.

Here's an update on my Revelation 30-30.  I found an old scope I'd forgotten about hiding in a dresser drawer.  Lo and behold, it's a Revelation 2.5X!  Now the 1965 gun and scope from the same era are a team:







It shoots pretty good, too.

Wow!  Looks like both rifle and shooter are tuned VERY well!  That rig ought to give a fella (or a lady) confidence to put meat on the table.  Too bad standard .30-30 bullets won't kill deer.

back in the 1970's i worked at a western auto store, we sold a full line of guns back then, that old store has been gone for years it was one of those down town stores before wal-mart killed our town, i have a like new revelation mod 205 30/30 i bought back in the 70's, it's a marlin 336 with the western auto-revelation name on the gun, i paid 89.00 for the rifle back in 70's, back then we sold single barrel shotguns for 19.95 to 29.95 each new in the boxes, but i was only making 1.50 per hour at the best so 89.00 was alot of money to me at the time.

Man that thing seems to be a real shooter.  I'm sure it's a Marlin or a Glenfield.

Does it have  "JM" in a circle, near the rear of the barrel ? (That's the Marlin proofmark)

Thanks, Swampman.  That is a great link also!  I have The Wilderness Cabin along with Paradise Below Zero, looks like I have a bunch more titles to get! 

Calvin Rutstrum was an awesome writer.  I remember when he died, the eulogies all said he was not just a great outdoorsman, but a true gentleman also.  What more could a person want for his epitaph?

There's a niche market for Store brand guns Revelations, J.C. Higgins, Ted Williams,ect. They don't bring the inflated prices of Winchesters, But seem to appeal to the Dad got me  one of those way back when . I find it hard not to take one of them home when I find them. They a lurking in closets forgotten alot of time waiting to come to life again.
