4506 Safe Carry
« on: July 30, 2006, 02:22:26 PM »
I have a couple of questions about the 4506.  The safety de-cocks the hammer and blocks it from hitting the firing pin.  But is it safe to carry with a round in the chamber, hammer down and the safety off?  It has an inertia firing pin but I was wondering if there was another internal safety to prevent firing unless the trigger was pulled.

Also, can someone recommend a field carry holster?  I'm not interested in concealment but just something to protect it, even a flap holster.  I know it won't fit into the military holster for the 1911, I tried it.

By the way, does anyone need a set of straight back grips for the 4506?  Somehow I've ended up with an extra set.

TomP,
You answered your own question. "Saftey lowers the hammer and blocks it from hitting the fireing pin"". What else would set the gun off? If it's dropped and lands on the hammer the hammer is blocked from hitting the fireing pin, and landing that way would cause the fireing pin to move away from the chambered round.

The Bianchi service style flap holsters will give you what your looking for without spending a lot of money.

The 4506 and 4506-1 both have firing pin blocks that keep the firing pin from hitting the primer unless the trigger is pulled.

Thanks for the replies.  So, even with the safety OFF and the hammer down, a blow to the hammer won't connect to the cartridge in the chamber.

Dave375hh, it looks like the Bianchi UM921 is what I had in mind.
