Remington 8mm 185grn PSPCL performance from 8X57?
« on: April 06, 2003, 04:48:46 PM »
Considering this bullet for the 8X57 Mauser to be used on deer and maybe Black Bear.  I've heard that this bullet proved to be a bit too brittle for the 8mm Remington Magnum; so I thought it might be better suited to the 8mm Mauser.  Sure can't beat the price for a hunting softpoint, either.  Any opinions would be appreciated, thanks. :D

I read a thread about that bullet on Accurate Reloading. The people that tried it, seemed to like it. I think it will be my next one to try after I use up the Hornady 170's that I have.

The Rem 185 is generaly an ok bullet.  As you mention, the price is right.  I have shot quite a few myself and find them to be a 2 MOA bullet accuracy wise out of any good M98.  Have seen a couple deer killed with them and one elk.  No bullet recovered from the deer but they only took one shot each.  The elk took one shot too and the bullet was recovered from the off side leg bone.  No complaints.  I wouldn't have any qualms about hunting with it in a 8x57, should suffice nice out to 300 + yards.  Considering 99.99999999% of all big game are killed much closer than that.

I've found they work quite well and probably more accurately at higher handloaded 8x57 velocities.  My standard and probably my hunting load with them is 46 gr of H4895 in Winchester brass which gets 2592 fps out of my VZ-24.  That is not a max load for my rifle. Yes, it is higher than some manuals but still ok by others as there is a very wide variation for this cartridge.  Take into consideration the condition of your rifle before using this load and work up to it.  I have used it in several M98 8x57s with no problems or pressure signs.

Larry-

Thanks for the advice.  Sorry it took so long for me to answer but I've been having problems with my new e-mail service and didn't get the e-mail notification in regards to your post.

I have a Yugo-48 Mauser that I'm having sporterized and I was looking for a cost friendly bullet for deer hunting with this rifle.  Looks like I've found it!

Thanks again, :D
