"93" Carbine
« on: July 31, 2006, 05:04:33 AM »
Just found a nice 1893 Mauser carbine in 7mm Mauser.
Sharp rifling and appears to be all original. Looks like possibly
from the Boer War.

Sweet I am done buying milsurps and I have a put together from parts 7mm 93 with a barrel that has a "good marked bore" from springfield sporters. I would not mind a nice 7mm but I have more guns than I have time to shoot now and that is not that many about 6 centerfires. Still on a limited income even reloading for that many gets a bit pricey and I cast for several of them.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

It's fairly easy to check if your M93 carbine was in fact Boer or not. Ron Besters book lists the serials numbers and when they were ordered and delivered. If it is in fact Boer it was ordered by the Transvaal as the OVS (Orange Free State) did not order any carbines only rifles.

I picked up 3 boer 93's from Samco they were barreled receivers with matching number turned down bolts they were all long barrels and were $89 each.  They all had decent bores too.  I have a few 7mm carbines but i forget what i have now its been sometime between playing with them. I know i purchased a few a few years ago. I'm sure i have a chilean 7mm carbine too besides the untouched 1916 spanish 7mm's too.  I guess some made it past the 308 change over line. I didn't see that many 1916's in 7mm they seem kind of rare.  I'm not sure if my chilean carbine is a '95 or '93 but i think its a '95.

This one has the "C" prefix before the serial number,
as I understand it, those were made for the BOERS but were undeliverable
due to a British blocade. They were then shipped to South America
and in particular Chile. Many Chilean Mausers were meant for the BOERS
but never made it.

Dman the spanish 93's had a flat spot on the front of the bolt on the bottom the 95's did not they were round.

The Mauser 93 has a square bottomed bolt. It actually rides on the bolt raceways in the action and they also have a rib on the inside of the left wall with a slot through the bolt lug which rides on it. These features were dropped in the 95. It's more than just a flat on the bottom of the bolt.

The  C prefix does not help as you have not said who made the rifle.

The M93 Special Sporting or Plezier which I still have is a genuine Boer rifle and was owned by a Mr J.P. DuPlessis Jnr was made by DWM. It has no prefix at all just a three digit serail number.

If I remember correctly, The C was put on the ones that were not delivered to the Boers
due to the British Blocade. They were rerouted to South America.

The ones returned to Germany due to not being able to run the British blockade were roll marked with the Chilean Crest and then shipped to Chile. They are rather easy to spot due to the crest.

All 3 of my samco 93's have the flat bottom bolts plus the rear of the receiver is thinner in width than the 95 is too. The 95 has two little butterfly wings at the rear of the receiver on both sides.  The 93 receiver is the same as the swede 96 stock in the rear of the receiver.
