my search for bullets for elk - Thanks
« on: July 31, 2006, 04:34:59 PM »
I'd like to say Thank You to all who responded to my prior questions reguarding bullets for elk. Thanks to all the information you've provided and for preventing me and my hunting partner from going to Colorado with bullets that may not have been up to the job. The animals we hunt deserve to be put down quickly and cleanly. I ordered 120 bullets from Precision Rifle. I'm going to try their Ultimate 1 Keith solid at 450grs. It is Colorado legal. They recommended the 450gr over the 400gr in 1 in 28 twist barrels. They had them in stock and would ship out today - we need to get shooting. Summer kind of got by and Sept will be here before we know it. I'm also going to slug my barrel and give Bullshop a call to order some 460gr NEx with #2 lube. I bet that really makes a difference in loading by having bullets that are just .001 larger.

Good deal shilo!

If you don't get the accuracy you want with just the conicals alone, get some wads. Fiber Gasket, Felt, Card or whatever you can find. I use gasket wads that I bought from Cabelas, .518" diameter by .060" thick. You will get better consistency, shot to shot. Do the Precision Rifle Ultimate Keith Solids come pre-lubed? I haven't shot those, cause I like the ones I shoot now, and they work too. ;D

The bullets at or .001" over your bore should shoot well. Slight engraving will ensure your bullet will stay put on your charge on a clean bore without having to shoot a fowling charge (squibb load). The slip-fit bullets will obturate (belly out) into the rifling when the charge goes off giving you the ability to load and shoot without swabbing. If you are going to hunt on a clean bore, you will want to swab to have the clean bore condition between each shot once you fine tune your load.

Specify pure lead from Bull Shop. Good luck with your loads and out West.

Great choice there shilo. Precision Rifle makes some very good bullets.

Yes, they do come pre-lubed. I'll let you know how they shoot.

Is this something new that Precision Bullet Co. has embarked on?

I was under the impression all their conicals are still being shipped unlubed.

Sorry about that, I made a mistake. I just called them to double check and they come dry. You have to put lube on them. They recommended several different products, one being bore butter. I've always used bore butter, so I'll try it on them.

That's why I asked earlier, I thought that was the case. Another reason to order from Bull Shop for me, his come pre-lubed in your choice of lubes. Lubing bullets can be a pain, unless you have the right equipment and lube. Bull Shop also sells 3 different lubes in a stick form and is currently working on a new formula that might just be the "lube of all lubes". :)
