sucker for a short barreled .45
« on: July 31, 2006, 11:57:33 PM »
went to the buddys gunshop and he had an .45 stainless vaquero like new  4 5/8s (old large frame) at a real reasonable price. I needed it like a hole in the head but its about like leaving a puppy at the pound to me. It needed a good home but then ill probably abuse it!!

What I would love to see is the blackhawk, bisley and vaquero available in a true sherriff's barrel length in the 2"-3" range.Especially in 45LC/45acp convertable!

i know what ya mean Lloyd
i have a ruger vaquero 45lc in stainless with the 4 5/8 barrel
i have had abt 600 bucks worth of custom work done to it
i am always looking for a carry gun for ccw and currently carry a glock 19
but i always come back to my rv
it just feels right in my hand balances and points effortlessly
i have been practicing spinning and fastdraw for nearly thirty years
i got this vaquero when they first came out in 93 and there has never been an i dont believe ever will be a better looking, feeling or handling shooter made
my only regret is that i havent kept up with the number of rounds down the pipe

I picked up a Stainless Ruger Bisley Vaquero 4 3/4 today at the SATX gunshow.  Its gonna need a round butt a lanyard and some sights!  Oh yeah,  its a 45 Colt.

While I've only carried about half a dozen 4 3/4" holster guns for the last 35 years, the other day a friend came by with a 4" AWA, with ejector, and I'm a wreck.  I've even had thoughts of shortening my second generation Colts and my 30 year old custom Ruger .44 Special.  I also have shorter guns, like Colt Sheriff's Models, but I believe that this 4" AWA is the finest handling piece I've come across.  Driving me nuts!

Today I dropped a spare 45 acp cylinder in my new 45 Colt to see how it would fit.  I went in, indexed, and locked up fine.  I shot a ragged one hole group with it at 50 feet.  Oddly, it hit closer to point of aim with the acp ammo than the 45 colt ammo.  I might mention that Alan Harton had already opened up the cylinder mouths on the acp. Measuring the 45 colt cylinder mouths were a bit undersize, so I am going to have Alan remedy that.

There's something to be said for a longer barrel: 200th year, stainless grip frame, ejector housing and SBH hammer. Cylinder throats came in at .453". One hole groups with full power loads to 50 yards, rested. Six moa out to the limit of IHMSA silhouette at 200 m.

I have a bunch of stainless .45 Blackhawks. One with a 7 1/2" barrel, 3 with 5 1/2" barrels and a stainless Bisley. I have .45 ACP cylinders for all but the Bisley. I like all of them, but my special favorite is one of my 5 1/2" guns. It seems to be very nicely accurate with anything I put in it. I have had the cylinders trimmed to take .45 AR in the .45 ACP cylinders. For range work, I am mostly shooting 200 SWC with 231 in .45 AR cases.
Someday I need to get a 4 5/8" .45 Blackhawk.

I dropped mine off with Alan Harton to make the 45 acp cylinder compatable with the 45 AR case.  Gonna have him BP chamfer my cylinders, trigger stop, and just for the heck of it install a  smith and wesson rear and a stroh front.   My brother round butted it for me and it totally changed the personality of that sixgun.  I cant wait to get it back.

You would think they would be laying around the gun shows at bargain prices but they are not.  And the Bisley versions are even more scarce.

Scott Williams...
WOW!!!!  Just minding my own business and scrolling through the forum and that pic stopped me cold.  Talk about love at first sight...I thought I would pass out.   Any info you can give on that gun would be most appreciated.  Don't mean to be nosey but I would love to have one like it and of course Ruger hasn't seen fit to reward us folks with Uncurable Short Barreled Syndrome.
                                                                                 Thanks!   Jeff

A short barreled .45 is one of the best balanced and handling of all sixguns.  I suspect that this comment should receive no arguments, but who knows?

My brother called to let me know that Alan Harton said my above mentioned 45 colt/45 acp/45 AR should be ready by Christmas!  Hows that for a gift!

I was looking for a "snub" type 45 colt, but haven't been able to find one. The closest thing was a discontinued Tauras in 45 colt.

...needed it like a hole in the head...

I know what you mean. Walked into a gunshow several years ago, and wasn't even thinking another 45 Colt. When I saw the short tube plus Bisley grips, the puppy followed me home.

Thank you, Joe. I know this is off subject, but must ask. What is the "oso" from? There is a town in Washington by that name not far from where I was raised. And I see you live in New Mexico.

that gun started out as a birdshead vaquero 45 colt. i installed the xr3-red grip frame and found a 45 acp cylinder in my spare parts box that fit. dave clements fitted the adjustable sights, recut the forcing cone, and removed the billboard.

I've got a NM Blackhawk, new this summer. Convertible, with the 5 1/2"

I want a 7 1'2. or even 8" tube on it.

I'd hate to send it to the factory for swapping since they'll keep the short tube.

Anyone have a long barrel that wants a short one?

Let's trade if so.  georgeld@hotmail.com
