Living in Alaska
« on: August 01, 2006, 03:00:18 PM »
Hi All,

I have a question:  What is it like living in Alaska now?  Cost of living?  Housing?  I have thought about moving back from Michigan.  When I was younger I spent a few years in Fairbanks, but the north is calling.

Thanks

Ron

Depends on where you want to locate to.  Alaska is a big state with very few roads.  Towns on the road system, but many miles from the larger towns can have lower housing and property costs, but everything else is going to be more expensive, especially gas and groceries.  Same with towns off the road system.  Any idea where you want to move to?  If so, the Cost of Living and job availability can be pinned down a lot better.

My neighbor moved here from Detroit, six years ago.  Now wonders why he took so long.  Yes, the cost of living is higher, but the wages are higher too.  The only taxes we pay here in the North Star Bourough is property taxes.  The towns of Soldotna, and North Pole, have a sales tax, but so far no where else in the state.  Great place to raise kids.  Low Crime area!

Forgot to mention I live in North Pole, 18 miles south of Fairbanks.  Beautiful summers, but bad winters.  I asked my Ex-mother-in-law why she stays here with the bad winters, the cold and all?  She has lived here since 1952.  Her reply was "The summers make up for it".  When the wife and I go shopping in town (Fairbanks), it seems we know half the people we see in the stores.  Every aisle someone stops us to talk.  When we go out to eat, we often meet people that we know who invites us to sit with them, or we invite them to sit with us.  There is never a lack of someone to talk to.  Of copurse I've lived here since 1971.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Honestly, what is the hunting like.  I have read several papers on populations, bear and wolf issues, but what is the sucess rate for interior beasts other then bear?
