My $.05 Worth

Echo what was said about 7-30 factory ammo.  I've never had a problem gettting any.  Also, that federal load works so well out of my 12" TC custom shop barrel, it will be hard to improve on when I work up loads for it this year.  Kiss of death on whitetail also.  As you can see from the posts, it's consistently a favorite load.  I think it would be better out to 200 yds. than the 30-30 IMHO.

By the way...CorBon now also makes a factory load for the 7-30.

GB posted his progression of loads developed (in case you ever do handload it).

Took two whitetail last year with the factory ammo.  They dropped instantly - both about 65 yds. (in fact I was surprised to see that it appeared to be more effective than my .270)

Kevin Reints, I never shot a deer through a six inch tree, but I did shoot a six point buck through a four inch tree. He was about 40 yds down hill, in some fairly thick brush. I tried to shoot through a clearer spot in the brush, but the bullet was deflected. The buck walked about 20 feet and stopped about 20 feet behind a four inch poplar tree. He wanted to run but wasn't sure where the shot came from. I put the red dot on the center of the tree trunk and fired. The 45 caliber, 330 gr. cast bullet sailed through the tree and through the deer. The deer was quartering on the me. The bullet hit on his shoulder and came out the rump on the opposite side. I was surprised the bullet went clean through the deer after passing through the tree. The buck ran about a 100 yds. and bleed out. The 45/70 Contender is an impressive caliber.  8)

Kevin Reints, if you like to plink odd things, check out this site http://www.singsingsing.com/has.html    it's pretty funny. I once shot a commode with a semi-auto 9mm carbine, that someone threw in a old dump. It was great, white dust and porcelain chips flying. Didn't last long untill it was a pile of pieces, but it was fun while it lasted. Try shooting a concrete block end to end, with your 45/70 using 400-500 gr cast bullets. The dust ball and flying pieces are great. I've shot at a few ranges that had bowling pin laying around for targets. I like to stand them up, on something, and watch them go flying when the 45/70 bullets whack them. I've always wanted to see if the bowling ally had any old bowl balls they wanted to get rid of. When hit with a 45/70 bullet, would they explode or would the bullet just penetrate with little show? Has anyone ever shot a bowling ball?  There is a farm near me where the farmer will drive some old golf balls into a cut hay field. A friend and I will sometimes take our varmint rifles and vaporize the golf balls at 200-300 yds.  I'm always looking for great things to plink.  8)
