BC 45/70 & 38-55
« on: August 02, 2006, 09:05:28 AM »
Well, went to my local Walmart to order me a Buffalo Classic 45/70 today.  Walmarts supplier is out of stock of the BC 45/70.

So, I thought to myself, I will just get the 38-55 now and the BC 45/70 later.  Well, guess what?  Yep they are out of them too.  I just can't win.    >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Maybe a roadtrip to Indiana or Tennesee is in your future if you want one bad enough, Sportsmans Warehouse sells em for $299 the last time I checked. ;)

Yea, then my local FFL will lay it to me.  By the time he is done with me the rifle will cost me $400.00.   ::)  I want one, just not that bad.  At the time I wanted a 22 mag Ultra They were out of them too.  I did get one finally, 8 months later.

I don't want to say the very few FFL's in my area are crooks...... OK I'll say it, they are crooks.  They hate Walmarts and all of them hope Walmarts stop selling rifles, shotguns and ammo.  If Walmarts do stop selling these things I will be..uh...uh... well you know what I'll be.   :'(

Thanks for the link, but the closest would be about a 5 hour drive each way.  A 10 hour drive just there and back.  The only thing I am aware of that is reasonably close to me is Dicks Sporting Goods but I have never seen any NEF rifles there.

Jack,
Last year I decided that I simply must have the H&R Target Model rifle (38-55).  I went though pretty much what you are experiencing now.  Finally went to one of the dealers that is identified on the NEF web site and ordered the rifle....yup they told me that it would be on back order.  By then I made up my mind to just wait it out.  Took just over three months before I finally received the rifle.

It just seems that there is more demand than there is supply, but you could get lucky.  The 38-55 is a great little rifle and looking back, it was worth the wait.  Now I'm contemplating getting a 45-70 barrel for it.

PS: Wal Mart wouldn't order the rifle for me, they just said to keep coming back in and asking for them to check with their distributor....after 3-5 weeks of that I gave up on Wal Mart.  Wal Mart's price was $317 and the dealer I got it from was $330 (no S&H).

Jack, Have you tried this web site to find a good price on an FFL transfer? Plug your zip code in and see whatcha get, you may need to drive a bit to find one that costs less. I pay $20 for mine and drive 10 miles to em, but it's worth it, others charge twice that or more!

I have never had any trouble with my Walmarts ordering for me, they checked with their supplier and the supplier is just out of them.  I don't mind paying a little more than I can get it from Walmart I just don't want to be molested doing it.  :)  Tell me more about what you like about the 38-55.

Thanks for another link.  I got the number for Sportsman's Warehouse and will call them tommorow to see if they have a Buffalo Classic in stock.  I got a couple numbers also of some FFL's close to me.  The problem is the list of the FFL's is not up to date.  I know the one that was listed and close to me has been out of business for quite a while.  Thanks again

Yeah, I forgot to mention you need to check with them and like you say, make sure they're still licensed and also to see what they charge, their fees may have changed.

Tell me more about what you like about the 38-55.

The 38-55 isn't as powerful a round as the 45-70, but I bought it mainly for target shooting.  The Target Model is lighter than the 45-70 Buffalo Classic so it would be easier to shoot offhand.  I also think that the barrel is heavier (more metal) and shorter than the BC, and should have a little more accuracy 'potential', but that's pretty subjective.

From what I've read the 38-55 cartridge was specifically designed in the late 1800's for target shooting, but it certainly can perform well as a hunting round too.  It seems to me to be a mini 45-70.

I like the hooded front sight on the rifle, but the rear sight, while functional, seems suceptible to improvement to me.  NEF offers a Williams rear sight for $60 that would be a good option if you were going to use it for target shooting at any distance beyond 100 yards.  I wrestled with the decision on sights for a while and ended up putting a scope on mine....my eyes are clearly aging.

The thing I like best though is the accuracy, best so far is .875 inch 5 shot group at 100 yards and I think it will get better as the rifle gets broke in more.  I cast my own bullets and reload them so I'm still experimenting.

I know he did have one, he has a website as well, http://www.budsgunshop.com Bud himself is a real nice guy, I have known him since I was 6 or 7 years old. I drive down there from up here in Ohio to deal with him because he will order what ever I want. I just went and looked at Bub's site, here is a link for you http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/89043 Give them a call like I said they have one there now.

Not a problem, got to take care of people from back home. :) I still have family over on top of Elk creek in Letcher co. and some in Whitesburg too. I miss running down route 7 flying low or fishing in the lake over at carr fork.

Thanks to Greg for letting me know where I could find me a Buffalo Classic 45/70 I traveled there today and picked it up.  Got it for $327.00 out the door.  Now I need some quick advice on what bullets the BC likes so I can order my reloading dies, brass and bullets.  Does anyone like to shoot cast bullets in their BC?

Jack,

I shoot the Lee 458 500 3R and the lyman 458125, both of these I load with black powder. I am glad you got your rifle today, I am probably going to stop in there Saturday on my way to my dad's place.
