338-378 Range Report

I'm Happy!  Got my Weatherby back from the gunsmith last night.  Went to the range to finish working up the load for the rifle.  Had two groups to shoot to finish up the work-up.  Shot at 50 yards looking for pressure signs, also used those loads to resight in the scope at 50 yards. 

Loaded up the loads I finally decided on and went to the range this afternoon.  At 100 yards, first three shots were a clover leaf.  Moved out to 200 yards, again a clover leaf.  Moved on out to 300 yards, first two shots were touching.  Third shot was off to the right about 3/4 inch.  I'm happy!  Eight days till Caribou season, I'm ready.  Need to go out early tomorrow morning on to the river bed so I can shoot on out to 500 yards and beyond.

Don't you know that thing is a magnum and that it is therefore quite impossible for you to shoot it that well?  Next thing you'll tell us is that you actually think you could use a rifle that shoots like that to some advantage in the field!   ;)

The goal is to be able to kill a wolf at 800 yards this winter.  As for recoil, with the facotry installed brake it is less than my Handi Rifle in 30-06.  The only drawback is powder, at 107 grains it don't take long to use up a can.

   Actually being a Weatherby is the main problem   ??? ::)

   Despite my feelings for the make as a whole  ::) it sure sounds like you wound up with what you were looking for  ;) Good luck in your Hunt  ;D.

What's you problem with Weatherby's,I have 6 and all are great with never a problem and always a tack driver right out of the box . I have a 338-378 Accumark and it is loud as hell but has a medium recoil with the brake like a 3006 .I have always used factory loads and have no complaints what so ever . ;)

Great shooter and greater shooting!  When I read the specs on that cartridge, all I could think was, "Wow!"  Tell me, Sourdough, if you shoot that thing in the front yard, do you still have to mow the grass? (grin)  Makes me feel like a sissy for playing with my .338 Winchester.

Have a great "boo" hunt!  (I'm jealous).

It's purely personal  ;) the Weatherby's that I have handled and shot did not impress me in any way. Their accuracy was mediocre and to me they do not feel good. It's not only Weatherby's though as the Remington 700 feels awful  ::)

My buddies brother brought this super douper weatherby MkV in 30-378 and it's been a right lemon  ??? it's been back to Weatherbys' at least twice and they have tweaked it and even replaced the synthetic stock but it still will not shoot consistantly. One moment it will put two bullets next to one another but the next may be 6 or 7 inches away. They have tried  factory, handloads and several different bullets even different shooters but it's alway the same random in where it put it's shots. After Weatherby's several Gunsmiths have tried to get it to shoot but it will not shoot consisitantly, heck even 2 MOA would be a vast improvement. I have told him repeatedly to get shot of it but he likes it for some strange reason. Have not spoken to him for a couple of years now so I don't know if he ever got rid of it.

What kind of Velocity are you getting with say the 250,225,200 gr bullets. I'm just curious. I own the 338 RUM

I'm shooting the Nosler 225gr Accubond, it's a boattail design, with a polymer tip.  I'm getting over 3200fps, between 3208 and 3209 with my Chrony.

I just got back from a Black Bear hunt up in Ontario, My 338 RUM will push the 225gr Accubond boattail with polymer tip at 3178 fps. So I guess we are pretty close in fps.

I'm using IMR-7828 and RUTUMBO.  I'm having better luck with the IMR powder.  I haven't Chronigraphed the 250s yet.
