Recipe? 280 Rem any ideas?

I just aquired a 280 Rem with a 26'' BBL. I have came up with a load to start off with 140 grain Barnes Triple shock X bullet loaded with 57 grains of IMR-4831 and lite with a CCI primer. I'm going to use this as dual purpose round for whitetail and hogs in the east texas area. I have never used Barnes bullets before so i hope i'm on the right track with this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

57 grains of IMR 4350 is significantly over the maximum recommended load according to the Nosler reloading manual.

 I certainly HOPE you worked up to this load! Even in that long barrel that is a hot load. that bullet from a 708 will kill an elk at a couple hundred yards.   http://www.chuckhawks.com/280Rem.htm   for more info

That's not a "Starting Load".  Even Looking at the powder you listed, (from the online loading tables form the IMR website) IMR 4831 max's out at 56.5 with a 140 grain bullet.

I understand, and have practiced, putting more powder (than typically shown in the reloading books) in cartridges with the TXS bullets as Barnes suggests.  And had excellent accuracy out of my 7m-08.  But for the 280  I typically use Hodgdons 4831 at 58 grains with a 140 Accubond and Fed 210 primers.  I should work up some loads with the TXS for the 280 but am too engrossed with my 308 right now. 

Like the boys say, work up them thar loads carefully.  You do not want any surprises.

I understand wear every one is coming from about starting out small and working my way up to 57 grains. But I bought this gun from a guy i know who was hand loading this round but at 57.5 grains. But he was not happy with it's accurcy. So i'm going to take a try at it. I'm going to start at 57 grains and work my up a tenth at a time and play with the bullet depth until i dail it in. Plus he made me a deal i couldn't refuse.

The 280 is an excellent caliber . . . You'll enjoy it.

perhaps yoyur "friend " has worn out the barrel! You don't often get the best accuracy at max or overmax loads.You should try some different powders and primer combinations.STARTING low and working up. The 280 is a fine round and can be used on every thing from prairee dogs to elk.You did not say what the problem was. My 280 was a 25-06 that I had rebored to 280 AND THROATED for 160 gr bullets.It will put almost any weight bullet under an inch at 100 yds,5 shots. It will put 5 160's under a half inch.Though different brands require different loads to do this! All I am trying to say is I'd HATE to hear about you OR A BYSTANDER hurt .
