6XC
« on: August 03, 2006, 01:18:36 PM »
Does anyone have a rifle or know someone with a rifle chambered for the 6XC cartridge?  It's a 6mm caliber developed by highpower competitor David Tubb.  While not trying to start a debate over whether some cartridges are "inherently accurate" or not, I'll just point out it's won a lot of highpower competitions at Camp Perry.

You can now get new brass for it, but it's based upon a .22-250 case necked up to 6mm.  If the parent case was good enough for a .257 caliber bullet, it ought to do fine with a .243 bullet too.

Seems like it would make a decent sporting round.  Low recoil, yet capable of putting down deer, antelope, or anything smaller with the right bullet.  I'm not expecting any of the big gun makers to start offering it as a standard chambering; but, I'd think it'd be a good choice for a youth or wife wanting to get into rifle hunting.  Or someone like me, who likes to shoot his hunting rifles and doesn't want his shoulder pounded more than is necessary.

Outside of the catalog I get from Creedmore  Sports, I never see any mention of the 6XC.

The 6 INT is off the 250 savage case came out in 1957/58 as a 300meter rifle  later Rem offered it in the 40x rifle.  In Nosler reloading manual #1 they had loads for the 6mmx250.  Another great round off the 22-250 case was the 6HLS.  If you go over to www.varmithunters.com and ask you will find alot shoot the standard 6x250 or 6x250AI.   I wasn't interested in shooting the 6xc so I had a plain 6x250 build using a 1/14 twist barrel as a varmit rifle and  I may do a 6x250AI.  I could be wrong but isn't the 22-250 parent case the 250 Savage
Gunsmith here in Co by the name of Weaver is building a good wildcat 20x250.  I got hooked shooting the 6HLS then had acouple 22-250AI build now a 6x250.
As to a sporting rifle you have the 243  and the 6xc is geared for the highpowder shooters and the 115gr LVD.  Tubb's started out with the 6x now the 6xc hopefully there won't be anymore changes to that case, I think the case is about max out but could be wrong.  I'm not sure if Tubb's has the rights to the 6x or 6xc.  As you see could be some problems getting someone  to market a sporting rifle in 6x or 6xc.

Good info, yes indeed the 22-250 is based on the 250 Savage.  Sodbuster, you can get a lot of info from
www.6mmbr.com   & you may allready know that. I don't have one currently but I do have a 22-250 Model
700 VS that would make a good canidate. What I have read about the 6XC looks very good. I have thought about one of these or going to the 260 for my Wife to shoot Antelope & for me to punch paper when I get tired of this 22-250 barrel, which will be soon.

For a sporting rifle, I see this round as a Varmit cartridge for windy days & long range & for Deer size animals
a medium range round before the energy gets too low.

If you get one, please let me know how it does.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

Regrettably, my wish list is much fatter than my bank account.  I already bought a rifle this year and don't expect to be pickin' up another for many months (rimfires don't count, do they?).  And when I do, I doubt it will be a custom barreled or chambered one either.  Still, the 6XC appeals to me as a low recoil round that will send 100 grains downrange with enough authority to put down a deer at most any range I'm likely to encounter.

The list of rifle and cartridges I'd like to have grows much faster than my paycheck.
