Anybody out there have any experience with the 460 Rowland?

Are you considering getting a conversion kit? I am. Read some good reviews of it by John Taffin. I'm thinking about using it as a sidearm out west. 44 Mag power, 8 rounds, quick reloads, my gun has night sights, small narrow, would carry well in a shoulder holster under my arm. I don't think it would weigh any more than a 4" Smith or 5.5" Ruger single action. I really like the idea of night sights.

Yeah, I am considering a conversion kit. Just biught a Norinco for that purpose. Plan to use for hunting.

I called Clark to ask a couple questions. While talking with them I mentioned that I was thinking of using it as an "outdoorsman" sidearm for out west. They said that alot of people were using them for that purpose.

I wouldn't take Clark's claims for anything very seriously if I were you. I've dealt with them and will not buy anything from them again. Ever.

Why is that? As far as I know Clark is the only manufacturer of the .460 Rowland drop-in kit.

Because I made the horrible mistake of buying a custom gun from them. It was an awful experience on every dimension. I don't want to spend the time writing the details. If you need more convincing, try posting some things on the L-forum related to bullseyepistol.com Everyone else I've bought custom or other high end target pistols from have been a joy to deal with. Clark sucks.

I'll be able to give a first hand replie soon. Was over at one of my favorite gun shops today and asked the owner about the 460 Rowland conversion kit. He also does gunsmithing and has built numerous 1911 raceguns. He thought they were a good kit, worked good and were not abusive to the gun as long as they fitted properly. He thought it was less abusive to the gun than the 45 Super. I told him I was thinking of ordering one and would have him install it. He said he thought he had a kit there unless someone had sold it. He started looking through bags and packages of 1911 barrels and comps and found it. So he went ahead and installed it in my Springfield TRP. He said the locking lug engagement was good. The barrel fit tight in the gun with no vertical movement. The comp's lines lined up pretty good with the slide. We talked about how the comp slows the recoil velocity of the slide, delays the unlocking of the barrel, and allows a lighter recoil spring to be used than what would otherwise be needed. Going to shoot it tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

I have had a 460 rowland for 2 years. I bought a conversion drop in from clark. I have also bought loaded ammo from them several times and I have never had anything except professional service from them. I put the conversion on a kimber, and it shoots great. I would not hesitate to do business with them again.

Can I ask about the data of your .460 Rowland cartridges? (i.e. bullet weight, velocity, feeding reliability and bullet configuration?

I mostly use Clarks loaded ammo. I shoot their 185 grain nosler jacketed hollow point at 1550 ft/sec. It shoots fine in my kimber. They also make a 200 or 230 grain, that is hot, but a little less ft. lbs of energy than the 185 grainers. I hope this helps. 50 loaded rounds of the 185 grn. hollowpoints is 28.00 dollars. Shot the 460 today. 50rds. No problems, no malfunctions. I think these were rounds that they had loaded up to sell and I think they were alittle hot. They were marked 230gr 1350fps. I think the primers were flattened too much and the brass was being thrown about 10'. Wish I would have had my Chrony with me to check. Muzzle flip wasn't much, but the gun seemed to hit the heal of the hand. The checkered mainspring housing probably made this more noticable. I'm looking forward to loading up some rounds and doing some chronying. I'd like to find a 230gr @ 1200fps load.

What is the 460 Rowland used for? What kind .452 bullets work at the higher velocitie?

230gr bullets at 1340fps, 260gr bullets at 1100fps. This equals the "Ruger Only" loads out of some manuals. So pretty much anything the "Ruger Only" loads are good for. You have a good point about bullets. The bullets would have to be capable of holding together at these velocities. Right now I'm thinking about the Speer 225gr Mag JHP and Speer 260gr Mag JHP. Both of those bullets are used in their Ruger and Casull loads. The other bullet I'm going to try is the 255gr Keith cast from Penn Bullets. Should be able to shoot those at around 1100fps without much problem. That bullet at 1000 to 1100fps has been kind of a standard outdoorsman load out of 45LC for alot of years.

Thanks. I was just curious. A few years ago I wanted to buy a revolver from Dan Wesson that shot 460 Rowland, 45ACP, and 45 Win Mag. Unfortunately I couldn't find a dealer so I quit that project. It seemed like an interesting way of turning the old 1911 into a deer gun. I've always questioned what bullets would work for that purpose, but never bothered to research it.

I did the same thing, saw them advertised and tested but could never find one or anybody that knew how to get one. Thought it was a good idea and still do, could get a revorver rechambered I reckon.
