Quick: good info: there.I may want to look into the 38-55 barrel for my B>C> seem the recoil on the 45-70 does effect the damage disc in my neck.
Quick: do have any idea what they get for the 38-55 barrel? from H@R
Quick: as far as cast lead out there anyone cast soft lead 20:1 mix ? that you know of.

Lonewolf, nef s website lists the 38/55 barrel at 106$ plus the fitting fee of 15$ I have not sent mine off yet but will probably call them before I do. I cannot answer your second question sorry.

Lonewolf,

I've been casting 250 gr bullets for my H&R Target Model.  I basically use wheel weights and don't know the constitution of the lead.  Have been using a Lee mold and really like it, it is a nose pour design with a beveled base.

Had plenty of time (3 months) to read up on the Target model during my wait for the rifle.  There is a lot of discussion on the dimensions of the chamber and rifling so I waited until I could slug the bore before getting a bullet sizing die....lucky I did because I needed a .379 die.

If you do get a 38-55 barrel and reload I would strongly recommend that you take the first finished round and insure that it chambers and ejects.  My chamber is very tight and I had to put a mild taper crimp (sizing die less primer punch) to get the rounds to chamber.  I elected to let my brass and chamber wear in in lieu of polishing the chamber, but apparently some folks polish.  Don't be surprized if the brass sticks in the chamber, just use a 3/8 dowl rod to tap the case out.  This symptom diminishes as you shoot more through the barrel, but if you are hunting it is not a good thing, probably want to polish the chamber.

The rifle is very accurate and funs to load for and shoot.

:)Thats right comes to $131.00 and a great deal. I just got mine back and the problems reported by others on the forum are still there. >375 bore and .380 groove but with a .395 throat. I reamed mine to .4005 and it is shooting .380 cast quite well. With a lettle tinkering a very enjoyable rifle to shoot. a 6 flute reamer is avaible from msc direct.com for about 20.00 us $.
if its worth doing, finish it!

Lonewolf, I can supply ya with sources and such, but I don't load for a 38-55, I turned my .38-55 barrel into a .405 winchester before I even shot it, so listen to these guys, they're the ones that are in the know!! ;)

One bullet that I've seen recommended more than once is the 265gr BTB sized to .380"..

I can recommend that you read posts by Cheatermk3 and particularly JPH45, they've pretty much written the book on loading for the .38-55 Target. Since the search function is still turned off, the best way to find their posts is to go thru their profile and hit the "Show the last posts of this person" near the bottom of their profile page. You can scroll thru their posts until you find related threads. Neither one of them have posted much recently, so there won't be a lot of posts to weed thru to get to the good stuff. You can get to the member list near the bottom of the main index, then search for users and enter whomever you're looking for, but you need to know the user name to do that. Here are their profiles to get you started.

I had a hard time finding brass when I first got my 38-55, didn't fell like paying for factory ammo. So I loaded up some good ol 30-30 with a light load and fire fromed them for the 38-55. They are about .10 inch short but worked fine untill I found a supply of brass.

Hello charlie45...If you have the part # for that reamer would you please post it...I went to msc Direct's site and could'nt find it....Is that reamer a chamber reamer or a straight reamer? ...the reason I ask most reamers I found made by people who make chamber reamers are at least $90.00......$20.00 seems like a real good cheap fix!.....thanks for any info ~ :)~
