fitting a new barrel
« on: August 04, 2006, 12:59:45 PM »
I just got a new barrel from kenbev, and trying my first barrel fitting.  I have the hinge to the correct depth, and trying to work on the latch.  As I close it it pulls down on the striker but I cant figure out how much to take off.  I dont want to take to much and skrew up a realy nice barrel.  Also, the fritting instuctions say to hont the latch shelf down.  I know this may be a dumb question but do I hone the top or the back of the latch shelf.

Hone the top of the latch shelf on the barrel, go slow and check often with smoke or lipstick, be sure to keep the stone flat on the shelf to avoid rounding the edges unless you need to change the angle for more engagement on one side.

I should clarify this, the top being the angled part just below the ejector/extractor claw.....that's where the latch engages the breech end of the barrel. Fred has a good side view graphic on his web site in one of his accurizing links in the FAQ. In fact, he has some good modification tips there for improving latch engagement.

I was able to get it fitted just fine.  I had two problems my local gunsmith wouldn't fit it for me because it was "unsafe"  If you ask me it was more like he didn't know enough or was unsure of himself.  Also I use the internet at work, and for some reason I cannot open the fitting procedure by Fred.

It's possible that your employer has a filter or restrictions on their browser security settings or firewall that prevents access to certain sites, Fred's site, or rather Angelfire, has alot of popups and who knows what, that may be the cause of the block. In IE6, you can allow specific sites by entering the URL in the settings applet on the Privacy tab on Internet Options in Tools.

I agree with ya on the smith who wouldn't fit it, he probably doesn't have any experience with em and doesn't want to start, ignorance is rampant!! ::)
