pop up medicine faq
« on: August 05, 2006, 08:20:32 AM »
Is there some information missing in the pop up medicine sticky?  When I go to it all I find is a link to a forum discussion that talks about the problem, but I don't see much on how to fix it.  My .223 will pop open unless I really slam it shut.

netcott when you have the barrel of take a look at where the underlug is welded to the barrel, are there any lumps of weld or a big line of weld.  my buff classic was like that so when the action was closed and you held it up to the light you could see that the back of the barrel was not sitting up against the standing breech it looked like a v sapped window wide at the top of the barrel tapering to nothing towards the botom of the barrel, if yours looks like that and has the weld dags around the underlug you must get rid of the weld build up then it will close properleyand the lockup will work as it should hope this helps.

My post on the subject was pretty clear on what causes it and how to fix/prevent it....

Pop opens are caused by inadequate lock up, you can check the latch engagement, instructions are in the FAQ under barrel fitting.

Make sure the underside of the barrel is clean and free of any debris that might prevent the barrel from seating in the frame properly.

Also, make sure there is no oil on the latch or latch shelf, they should be clean and dry.

Check to make sure the loaded round is fully chambered and not preventing the action from closing all the way, this could be caused by insufficient headspace due to improperly sized brass or a dirty chamber.
