remington model 760

has any1 ever had or used a one of these? if so wat r ur thoughts on it in the .308 caliber? i have recently gotten 1 for about 300 bucks was this a good deal? thx for ur info.

I ran about 100 rounds thru one in 30-06. Actually a good shooting gun. Traded it off before I shot anything with it.

You got a fair price if the rifle is in decent condition. The first centerfire rifle I bought was a 760 30-06. I used it for several years until I got bit by the stainless bolt action bug. I sold mine to my son and he still has it. He got me a 7600 7mm-08. I like the pumps better than the bolt guns. For me there's no other rifle that mounts, balances, and swings like a 760/7600. I can shoot one better off hand than any other type.

I am thinking about getting another in 30-06 for a hog gun. Or maybe a 742 in the same caliber. I feel the 760 would be the more reliable of the two, any thoughts?

the 760 is more reliable i used to have a 742 it was good but the 760 is better. myn is in about 98 percent good condition.i have researched a little this gun was made in 1957 and is all original even the wood and bluing

That's a good deal if in good condition.  I bought "Dave in WV"s a few years ago and love it.  It's quite accurate and it goes out every year.  I like it for the tight stuff as it has the shortest length of pull and the shortest overall length of all my rifles while still have a 22" barrel.  If you've shot an 870 alot, you'll feel right at home!  My handloads in it (30-06) are probably closer to 308 Win. velocity  but the deer haven't seemed to mind ;D.

I think it is the perfect still-hunting woods/brush rifle.  Mine is the 30-06 carbine, but .308 may be better yet with shorter throw ejection.
