243 ULTRA
« on: August 06, 2006, 03:15:00 AM »
I have posted here many times about  this gun. i have had three sets of stocks,4or 5 scopes on it and still have never really shot it. well i have finally got the look and feel i wanted. i stole the straight stock camo laminated set from my NWTF 12a and added a new bushnell banner 3x9x40 now it suits me. do you guys see any problems with this setup?i am thinking  of taking it to my smith to get the hammer mod done so i cane bring my scope down a little. the only real problem i have now is i am HOOKED now i want a woods gun 30/300r 45/70 . what do you think of the 243 for deer max shot 200 yards ? i want to use this gun as a combo deer/varmint rifle. thanks to everyone who helped me out with this gun .

That statement is uncalled for, perhaps you'd like to rephrase it? Or offer a constructive opinion with your experience with the .243 on deer?

daddy sorry i can't help you buddy as i have never actually shot a 243...not sure why ?? "however" there are guys around that swear buy them on deer...personally i think a 25 & up caliber is better suited for deer...if ihad a 243 i would try to get a 90 grain bullet to shoot & in a hunting situation go for a neck or vitals shot...you probably already know that...at the yardage you are saying i would "THINK" you would be just fine...you here of guys killing deer with 64-65 grain bullets in 223's...good luck.

I have the SS Synthetic 243 Handi........didn't shoot to well at first, 2" groups at 100. But more I shot it and sanded the forend, it's shooting 1" groups. It has the best trigger of any of my 14 other Handi's, don't have a gauge , but I woud say 2lbs. Everytime I shoot it, it goes off before I expect it!

I personally like the 243. Always have. Many, many benchrest comps have been won with the little 6mm and still are.  It can be fussy to load for, and many people opt for a 25-06 for deer...also a good cartridge...however if you look at the ballistics of both you will find they are very similar. Both are fun to shoot, and can be very versitle on either Deer or Varmints.
I say why not pick up a 243 barrel and grab a box of Federal Power Shocks and Fusions and see how you like it?
If you don't like it you can always trade it off here in the classifieds for another cal. you are interested in...

I have a NEF Limited Edition 243 (cinnamon laminte stock, 22" bull barrel, scope rail, ejector, gold medallion in stock) I put a Weaver Classic 3x9x38 scope on it with lupold (high) mounts, and a camo sling. I also put a 9 round shell carrier on the stock I really like this solid little rifle and it looks pretty cool to. I paid $160 w/o scope and sling at a used guns clearance sale. The rifle looks brand new.

The first trip to the range the fired shell got stuck in the chamber and would not eject. I took it back to the shop I got it in and they sent it back to H&R. They did not charge me for shipping or repairs. When I got it back from H&R they put it in a new box with paper work, hammer spur extension, allen wrench and the problem was fixed. I even requested them to check the latch and it locks up tight on the first time I close it every time now. The customer service was great..

At the range it was grouping 1.5" from bench and sand bags at 100 yards. That was with winchester 100 grain. I also tried federal 80 grain and the groups opened up quite a bit. I have always heard these shoot the lighter bullets better, not mine.

In any case, 100 grain factory for deer will work fine and 80 grain factory for varmits will make this a great all around rifle for what you are asking. I reload an plan on working up some loads for what has become one of my favorite new rifles.

Yes like2hunt, I believe you did help me ID this rifle. Thank you. In any case it really is a nice little rifle and great first rifle for a young deer hunter. I pretty much said everything else about it in my last post. I find that with the short heavy barrel it is going to take some practice for me to get good groups offhand.
