Fitting trunion caps
« on: August 06, 2006, 04:56:04 AM »
I am going to build a sled mount for my Cohorn mortar and use an elevator screw. I was wondering what the proper fit would be for the trunion caps. If they hold the trunion too tight, seems the elevator won't be able to move the barrel. So do you fellows just try for a snug fit that will hold the barrel firmly but still allow it to move with some force?
Thanks----Michael

Just make them fit. Then put a thin piece  of shim stock under one trunnion our the other to snug them up.

If the mortar has rimbases, the trunnion doesn't need to be tight in the caps, since the rimbases will prevent side to side movement.  In fact, with a mortar, the caps only keep things together during movement; the recoil force tends to keep things together during firing.
