Hunting season is coming!!!!!!!!!!!

Leaving Wednesday afternoon for a Caribou hunt in the Chicken area.  Going to be there for six days.  Taking my Handi rifle in 30-06, also taking my Weatherby 338-378 just in case we cannot get close.  Will try and call in some wolves and bears also.  Got a fifteen day float trip planned for this September also.  Will be looking for Moose, Grizzly, Sheep, possiably Caribou, and maybe a wolf or two.  Depends on what we see on the river banks.  I call it the lazy man's way to hunt, till you shoot something.  Then it's work.  Good luck to the rest of you on this years hunt.  Rog

I'm getting pretty stoked as well. I'd like to shoot a moose not far from my house early this year before I head up north and hunt sheep in the TMA. I'm contemplating on whether or not to hit the Chicken area this year as well, but I'm not sure yet. Last I heard from the herd's whereabouts, they were unreachable from from the Taylor or the Steese highways at that time.

Well we are back, don't like camping in the rain.  The young GI we took with us got a nice Caribou, opening day.  While it is not record book grade it will make a nice trophy for his wall, with a lot of good memories.  We had a good time, but the main herd was not there yet.  That's OK, I"ll be back, after the rain.

Sourdough.  Sorry we did not connect.  It was a fast trip through Fairbanks.  We will meet someday. 

The rains moved in as my partner and I left north of Toolik.  That is the only reason we left.

Dave, how did you do that?  According to the Discovery Channel, Caribou won't go near the pipeline.  Yea, Right!  Good looking Caribou.  I got a lot of respect for someone that can stalk a Caribou up there before snow flies.  Not much to hid behind, for cover.  Maybe next time I go to Valdez we can hook-up.  Rog

There were about 250 caribou in the herd.  100 on one side of the pipeline and 100 on the other.  The rest did not see the Discovery Channel and were standing and laying in the shade of the pipeline.  I just used the supports as cover and the pipeline convently placed the supprts 20 yards apart.   I walked right at them with the supports between us, spooked a couple of cows but the others did not mind as they were wandering all over anyways.  At 50 yards, three bulls stepped out and I leaned my bow arm up against the support and let her fly. 

The caribou walk under the pipeline and I have never seen a caribou cross at one of the crossings where the pipeline goes underground for them.  :D  They probably do that because the enviromentalist thought they were too stupid to figure out how to walk under it and they so it for spite....... he he.

Ha it's summer and the Caribou are hot and  are looking for some shade.  The only shade on the North Slope is under the pipeline.  Imagine that, the pipeline being benifitial to the wildlife.  That could have a devastating affect on Prescillia Farrell, and the folks at Northern Environmental.
