.17 Mach 2 rifles
« on: August 06, 2006, 10:15:51 AM »
I'm thinking about a Mach2 for squirrels and a lever action would be fun.  Does anyone make one?  If not, what about a bolt action for $500 or less?

Mine is a Contender, and with frame and barrel it was under 500 dollars.

Browning made one last year.  I think they discontinued them in Mach 2 this year. I am sure there are still some around since the one at a store near me has been sitting on the shelf for a while.

I have the Marlin Bolt action.
I like it so much I may get another one!
I just wish the ammo would come down in price!

CZ makes their 452 in it. I've seen sales on the M2 at just over $300.00 a couple of times.

Has anyone actually shot a squirrel with one?  Was there enough left for stew?  I've heard everything from a great squirrel gun to it blows them up.

The 17HMR is hard on them.  The Mach 2 works well and has a little more range than a 22lr, but is affected far more by wind and is a bunch more expensive.

The Mach 2 is a GREAT small game round.  I have killed several squirrels wiwth the round.  I try to hit them in the head but I intentionally shot one through the chest at about 35 yds to see how much damage it would do.  The squirrel had a dime sized exit wound on the far side of the chest and was able to be skinned with no problems.  Even with a 22, if you hit them in the spine you usually pull them in half trying to skin them.  The Mach 2 will double your usual 22LR range.  90-100 yd shots are possible.

I have a T/C auto, a 16" Contender carbine barrel, and I just bought one of the Browning Lever actions but I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.  It has been around 100degrees here every afternoon.  No one else makes a lever action in the Mach 2 and Browning  quit making theirs last year.  I found one on Gunbroker.

Choose your shots well. I bought mine primarily for vermin
But it does a great job on small game with head shots.
My favorite squirrel load is still a .22 CB long though.

For some deals on HM2s, check out CDNN (www.cdnninvestments.com).  Download their catalog and check out what they have.  CZ452 Americans, Ruger 77/17s, Remingon 504s, Annie 1502D, and left-handed Savage Mk II are all there for great prices.   They used to have the BL-17s but haven't listed them for several months now.  I guess you could always ask to see if they have one or two laying around as uncataloged  ???

I have an Anschutz Mod. 1502 in that caliber.  Shoots into 3/8" c-c most of the time at 50 yards (off a bench).  Thinking about selling it; want a revolver.

We got our New England .17 Mach2 at Wal Mart for $128.00 in synthetic about 9 months ago I think it was.   Put a Burris Fulfield II 3 x 9 x 40 on top of it. We have taken out sparrows at 80 to 90+ yards many times.  My wife loves shooting this gun.  Haven't hunted any small game with it yet.  DO NOT over look this rifle, it is one sweet unit!

Ok, I am in the market again, my step son has appropriated my Marlin 981t. He's good with it too!  I was just going to go out and by another one. But I am taking in all of the possibilities...

Q:   HOW LOUD IS THIS ROUND??  I want something tolerable in the squirrel woods.

Thanks for your input.  JeffG

Sounds like you already picked up a nice little 17HM2 set-up.  As for the sound, it is a sharp little crack, not annoying or booming.  Of course, that little pill is booking, so you don't get to hear the thump of the round hitting the squirrel - you just get to see it start toppling out of the tree before the report fades away  8)

I am working on my first game animal with it.  The gun is way better than I expected accuracy - wise.  I am getting one hole 3 shot groups with CCI ammo at 25 yards, and very small cloverleafs at 50. One inch targets are easy at 100, I am pretty pleased!

I shot my first squirrel with my NEF 17 M2 Sportster just the other day.  Hit him in the front shoulder.  Almost tore one leg off but meat damage wasn't bad at all.

He dropped like a rock.  I use to use a 22 lr and had some squirrels that would try to crawl away after being shot.  I guess it just depends on where you hit them though, but something tells me after shooting this one it won't be as much of a problem with the 17 M2.
