I use a rest while doing bench work. The outters varmit rest was my first rest. I noted that if I positioned the rest on a bench where i could sit up straight, similer to the position I would be in while standing, the recoil moved me more than when I was leaning forward. In other words it don't hurt so bad. I watch people at the range, most people bring sand bags, roll up rifle cases, or sleeping bags. Then they get down or lean forward in almost a prone position to shoot. In that position their body gets all the recoil, they have no flexiability to absorb it. If those people don't stop after a few shots they start flinching.
