I have been looking and finding some enough to say it's here.
Stephenson county near Rockford has a little if you can find a farmer to let you work his Creek.
The little vermilion river has a decent showing.
My back yard is about as good as anyplace. I didn't realize I had rolled river rock about 8-10 feet down with highly mineralized sand. My place is the highest point with in 30 miles from Galena. Well I drug a cattle tank back to the hole and set up a high banker and worked it for five hours. Found some. but not as much as I did up in Alaska with a Dredge this summer for 2.5 months ;D
But there is some in the north west.

Does the GPAA guide tell or give tips on where to sell or have your ore assayed?

As a one time Southern Illinois resident who has moved to The Missouri Ozarks I am really surprised to know that gold can be found in some Illinois streams.  I realize that some small amounts of gold might be found in the lead producing areas of Illinois just as it is found in Missouri.  I know of no place in Missouri where it is worth actually trying to retrieve it unless you are in the big time lead business.  The lead mines in my area actually produce small amounts of copper, silver and gold but these come from ore that is found 1000 ' deep and are recovered only in the process of smelting the lead.  If not for the lead these other metals would not be worth mining.  I  don't know any place in Missouri where you can find worthwhile amounts of gold on the surface and am really surprised that there are any in Illinois.

I am from Ohio and we do find some good flakey gold here and there.  Get a map of glaciation of Illinois and concentrate on streams that disect Illinioan terminal moraines.  Here in Ohio and southern Indiana, those seem to produce best.  If you can get to bedrock in these streams, all the better.  The cracks and potholes catch the gold.  The Illinioan moraines produce better, becuase the they scraped off the better gold producing rock from Canada first.  Chuck  Lasseter has a good book out (Midwest Gold Prospecting).  Well worth the low cost and great reading.  I might be able to locate a map I had once and will post if I can find it.  Hope this helps some...

Here is a good read on Illinois glacial geology.  Keep in mind that the better gold is usually found in streams that dissect the Illinoian Terminal (end) Moraine deposits.

Here's the link to Chuck Lasseter's website.  Pertains mostly to Indiana, but a LOT of good info here...

This is a good site. Go to the state by state forum, or ask on the prospecting forum. Very nice folks there..(just like here!).
