Blackhawk SS 45LC - Would you buy it?
« on: August 08, 2006, 11:42:06 AM »
I'm not a big fan of the NMBHs, but there's this one stainless number at the shop with the 4.6" barrel. It's like that big ol' bore is saying "hooooooooooooowdy pardner" to me every time I past the counter. I wasn't looking for any more Rugers, but this one would make a nice looking beater for my 45 LC test loads.  I didn't ask, but it's probably used, even though the side I can see shows zero wear.

I passed over a 41 mag NMBH with a dented grip frame not long ago, and for more money than this stainless one. Even considering how Ruger has over-saturated the handgun market with cheapies, this one is a bit on the low side at $325. So what do you think? Should I even bother inspecting it? Think there's probably something wrong with it, like .600" chambers or termites in the grips? Would you be really suspicious if it's new?

Do tell!

I paid $300 for a SS  45 with a 7 1/2" barrel and have been looking for a shorter barrel every since. I'd pay that for it! Ya ain't in VA are ya? "cause if ya are,let me know where its at and I'll tell shortly how well it shoots! None of our local stores have any and I've been to the last 3 gunshows with no luck.

I am in Connecticut, unfortunately. Was yours new in box for that price? That's a steal!

No, it was used but not abused. What really sold me on it, was the ammo can. It contained 500 rounds of 200gr LRN in Starline brass! Sure would love to run into another deal like this!!!!!!!!!

500 cases would go for about $100 around here, so you actually got the gun for $200. Was the guy still wearing his shirt when you walked away? Heh.

I think I'll check that revolver out this weekend.

If you don't already own the 4 5/8" NMBH in .45 Colt then the answer is YES, BUY IT!!!!
Of course you may trip over a used one for less but that is a good price on a very desireable(to me anyway)model. I paid $275 for a slightly used one a few years back and I realy like it. I do find the grip frame a little short with heavy loads though. Darned fun gun to shoot. Besides if you pass on it you will hate yourself for it later :'(
"Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level then beat you with experience." Not sure who first said this, but it makes sense.
Best Regards,

DWtim,

Well , did ya buy it or not ?!?  Don't keep us wondering , man!

Yeah , He still had his shirt on. I think guys around here prefer 44 Mags to a 45. Don't make no sense to me. It must be 'cause it says MAG on 'em.

Sorry about that.

I went up the next day and someone snatched that sucker right up. :(

EDIT: And yes, I'm hating myself for at least not asking for a reserve.

Well, I'm a moron. It turns out the gun was buried in a part of the cabinet where I could not see it. The display case happens to be decorated, so it's difficult to see things on the top and in the back. I had a chance to handle it today, and it's a good specimen. I just got paid today so... ;D I can't wait. :D

Here's mine with Cary C curly Mesquite grips and a SBH hammer.  I like it.

Well, I brought her home yesterday, and by luck, was able to get out to the range with my brother and try her out. Accuracy is good, but not great. Everything works like it's supposed to. Trigger is good, but what I like best is the nice balance with the gun, which is notably missing in my 7.5" Super Blackhawk. A real joy to shoot, despite the New Model "safety annoyances improvements".

I cleaned her up a little while ago, but I must say that the stocks are looking mighty pedestrian compared to yours, Swampman.

My OEM stocks fit so poorly I had to replace them.  The fellow that made these said the grip locating pin was in the wrong place.  He couldn't use his jigs and had to make these pretty much by hand.

yes i did get a new rifle...that with 5 different loads, different bullets, powder, and brass...wouldn't shoot better than 2" without high pressure signs. so it went bye bye.

Those 45LC in SS almost look like my SS 5.5" barrel Redhawk 44 Mag. My 45 LC isn't SS.
