Is there a cannon in this peice of stock?
« on: August 08, 2006, 01:24:23 PM »
Well, I made a peice of scrap. So when you have lemons, I guess you make lemonade.
Do any of you fellows see a cannon here? The dimensions are 12" long, the big end is 4" and the small end is 2.700
I would love to make a cannon like George has been working on someday. The small end may be to small but I could make a ring to shrink on and make it bigger again. What do you think?

I can see a cannon with a 7/8 ths bore. That's a 2oz. cannonball, maybe even a 4 oz. ball.
This is my bronze howitzer that Powderkeg made for me with material supplied by me. It's about 9 inches OAL and shoots a 3 oz. cannonball fishing weight that costs under 40 cents each.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

What are the dimensions of the pieces?  They look like partially completed Brooke rifles.  I can send you a freelance drawing of one if you like.

Jeeper, that is a great looking cannon and I've got to build one like that some day!
George, the dimentions are, starting at the small end
Dia--2.700 X 5.150 long
Next Dia--3.025 X 2.750 long
Next Dia--4.00   X 4.800 long
Overall length is 12"   Material is 4130 prehard
Yes, they do resemble those Brooke rifles. I would like to see the drawing you have.
Cat, I've turned down eight of these. Should we build eight cannons?
Thanks fellows
Michael

I see a Widow Blakely

Scale this drawing up 1.4 times for direct scale or use Millwright/Gunsmith Desgin MIF techniques...Engineers could never figure out how John Browning desgined his guns using MIF. Browning made the guns first then the engineers came behind and drew them.  We have that backwards now.

For MIF with the turnings just as they are put a taper on the front two sections. You migh lengthen the midd'e section a bit and shortenthe breech section.  Make a cascabel,  Bore 1.33 add trunnions  and you have a Widow Blakely replica.

There is also at least one 8 inch siege howitzer in there  also.  Oh how about a Carronade and Daniel King Howitzer,  And surely there is at least one mortar.

If you can't see that in them, I'll furnish you an address of where you can ship them, becasue i see them.

Thanks for the drawing George, it looks good and yes, it looks like the material would make one of those. The Parrot that Powder Keg made really looks good also.
Double D, I can't beleive I now have so many choices! I like the looks of the Widow Blakely also.
Do you remember Phelps Dodge copper mine when you were here? I think I need to make a trip there soon now that I'm interested in cannons. I have bought tons of steel there for .10 a lb. If I would have known I was going to get interested in cannon building I would have got a lot of big round stock!

There is even enough for a cascable.  I would adjust the bore to 1" exactly instead of the oddball number the reduction from golf ball diameter resulted in.  Same with the trunnion diameters.

Don't forget to get some trunnion stock while you are there.  And make sure the material is weldable.

Good idea, I will have plenty of time to think about it. I still have a couple of soda can mortars to make first and I will have to wait until I get this job finished. I am making some parts for a gearbox and it may take several months to finish these up.

Double D, I don't think I made it very clear that I screwed one of these up while turning parts. So I only have one for cannon stock, just the one I messed up. I believe your thinking I have eight pieces for cannons. Glad you posted those drawings though.

No not at all, I believed that you only have one piece, but I see all those cannons in that one piece.

Well, there is nothing wrong with ordering material also...your wallet is deep, isn't it.

By the way the piece of steel for my very first beer can mortar project came from the rail yard at Tuscon;  piece of axle from an old rail car. I never finished that mortar as I moved back to Oregon.  I gave that partially finished gun to one of the Cochise County Deputy's. Heard he fired it quite a bit after I left.

I see a large bore Medeieval Handgonne! The small end being the tiller socket end, a chambered piece much like a mortar.

Wow, CP, that would be a really big one wouldn't it? I can't tell if your joking with me or not ???
But if your aren't joking it wouldn't work for me bacause I have arthritis pretty bad and there would be no way I could hold it up. It is all I can do to carry one of these around and have to use my jib crane to put in the lathe and mill. I know it would be a lot lighter when finished but mounted on a tiller, I doubt I could hold it!
I really like the Widow Blakely and the Brooke submitted by Double D and George. I think the Brooke is the one it is going to be for now.

No, I'm not joshing you. Not all handgonnes are handheld. Hand in medieval terms means man portable. At the Vt. Ren. Fest. in 2005 we had a handgonne that was a 1pdr, 1.75" bore, that's it in my avatar. Its named the Beast, 480 grains of fffg blackpowder. The shockwave set off car alarms a 1/2 block away, rattled tje windows on a house on a hill about 1/4 mile away.

Good looking gonne claypipe!  It may be added to my list of projects.

Gonnes are fun to build.  No welding, no trunnion to attach; just turn it, drill the vent and mount to a tiller.  They make great weekend projects.
