tried the 450gr conicals today - more questions
« on: August 08, 2006, 04:07:01 PM »
Got a chance to try the Ultimate 1 450gr Keith conicals from Precision Rifle today. After installing a Williams rear peep sight, I was glad to see I was nearly in the center of the paper at 25yds. Moved back to 50yds. Seven shots into 4.5". What can I do to tighten this up? Do conicals not shoot well with pellets? I was shooting 2 Pyrodex pellets, just to use them up. Going to go to loose 777. My loading procedure was: swabb ( TC #13) with moist not wet patch, lube bullet with bore butter, and seat bullet. I am also going to try a wad over the powder. I have heard this often times helps accuracy. Why? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

shilo,

Don't shoot conicals with pellets. If I remember correctly it says something about that on the box or information that comes with the pellets. You can shoot PowerBelt conicals with pellets because they have the plastic skirt on the base.

Get yourself some 777 loose powder in the 70 to 80 grain range for starters, then work up in 5 grain increments until accuracy starts to suffer, then go back to the most accurate charge. The wads will generally help tighten groups because they seal off the base of the conical to help prevent gas cutting of the base and keeps things more consistant from shot to shot.

If I remember correctly you shoot an Omega, the QLA barrels for some reason generally do not shoot conicals worth a hoot. So, even if you are doing everything right, the gun just might not be capable of shooting conicals well.
