handi/smith ??

 hello, i was wondering do some guys use a gunsmith for handi improvments ?? i realize most handi owners are do it yourself type's i assume ?? i mentioned some things to a smith i have used for bolt guns & he didn't say yes "but" he didn't say no...i think he is worried about racking up a bill on a $200 or gun...of course handi's are a slightly different breed...however there are some bolts guns out there that need work also..the best way is to be a "home improvement" type of guy of course...some of us are not !! that being said guys will spend big dough on a $600-$700 gun or whatever to shoot 1/2 groups..i might spend some money to shoot 1"groups or so...mainly i'm concerned & would like to fix the gap i see when i hold my handi up to a light it's at the top of what i think is called the breech..where the action closes right below the scope mount..i read the faq section of course & don't feel i'm up to the task of epoxing thin metal or bedding the underlug...maybe good enough is just that ? i have been stirring the pot around here lately hopefully not to much...thanks.

Dave, if you're referring to the the space between the breech end of the barrel and the standing breech of the frame, there should be no visible gap there when the action is locked up, a .001" to .002" feeler gauge blade placed between the the barrel and frame near the top and to the left or right of the firing pin, with the action closed on it,  should be hard to pull out if not impossible. If yours has a visible gap and the latch is definately fully engaged, contact H&R and ask for them to fix it. If it's relatively new, they'll pick up the tab for shipping if you ask!!

To answer the rest of your question, Wayne York of Oregunsmithing is quite knowledgeable about Handis, he's done 2  custom caliber rebores and a rechamber for me so far, he does excellent work, his 6 groove cut rifling is to die for!!

hello, thanks tim, i never really noticed my gap i locked up the action in the field looked ok..the other night i held it up to my light at my bench & then walked outside to hold up to bright light & sure enough there is a visable gap at the top...i never considered that h & r may pick up the tab for shipping...i figured if i had to pay somebody a resonable fee it may be around the cost of to & back shipping ?? i will snag a feeler gauge & check for my info "however" if i can see daylight i know it's not right...i appreciate the help...

I've got one custom 338-06 A-square done by him...and I'll say his work is excellent...and second what Quick says about the cut rifling he does...Accuracy is better than what one could hope for with a Handi..Especially pushing a 180 grain Accubond at 3050fps 15' from the muzzle..

I'm having a 270 Winchester done from 1 of my (2) 25-06 barrels this month..and I know it will be just as good as my A-Square...

PS...concerning your other thread on headspace...a visable gap+full lenght resizing=short life for your brass...not to mention eratic accuracy...

mac, thank you also...i was going thru my targets last night & realize i'm on a handi learning curve "but" after establishing a pretty decent load i would shoot a good group or two then BAM..a crummy one ?? i take great pains to shoot as cold of barrel as i reasonably can...warm groups are of no concern to me...i thought i had things going good go to the range sunday night for final testing & fire a 3 1/2" five shot group...my only for the day with the handi..i had been in the 1 1/4-1 1/2 area my last 5 or 6 trips...usually only shooting one or two groups with that gun per trip...thats when i got to poking around for gaps ect...anyway i talk plenty...thanks again for the tip's !!!

Your Welcome Dave...

Try cutting a small piece of a Pepsi can..roll it on a #2 pencil..and put it on the lug pin...and carefully fit the barrel back on....Then try to close it...see if it will lock up tight on it...it should...You can also use brass shim stock...and if you have a Ace Hardware store in your area..they should have a multitude of thickness to try...It isn't as good a what Quick & Fred M do...but can be a temporary "quick" fix...and has work for several folks...It's a pain if you are switching barrels a-lot...and will fall out on you if not carefull

hello, just had time to call h&r...they agree with you guys...there should be no gap...anyway they will fix or replace barell. repair will be a week or two..thats not to bad...thanks again.

quick..i wanted to put a feeler gauge to it before i put anything in stone...the smallest i could find was 0.002 anyway if i place it near the top at the standing breech i can pull out fairly easy...if i place the gauge on the barell & across the bore it locks up tight & can't pull out..i'm afraid that i might be making a mountain out of a molehill..BUT i still see a small gap..

If there's a visible gap, it's way more than I like, keep in mind that any gap adds headspace in addition to any that the rim is below the breech end of the barrel, which I like . Mine lock up tight on a .001" blade placed on either side of the firing pin and there's no visible gap at the top. If it were mine, I'd send it in, it will only make it more accurate and your brass last longer. ;)

tim, thanks for asking about the shipping...i have monday off & will call them & get my duck's in a row...being that this is my 1st handi i was a bit "unconfidant" in my diagnostics..i re-checked the gap visually several times since my 1st post & it was like now it looks ok?? now i go to a different light & see a gap...anyway today as mentioned i set that 0.002 feeler just barely above the bore snap the action closed & i pull it out barely any resistance...i just got home opened the garage door & held the rifle at my waist looked down & put a flashlight on the other side of the action pointing the light up towards me & sure enough a gap...sooooo...to make a long story short it's not right in the beginning i thought maybe this the way they are ?? it's getting shipped out hopefully tuesday...i don't expect perfection from a $240 rifle & knew going in i would probably spend a few bucks to have a decent shooter...if they fix me up i will be more than pleased...i owe you & mack a cold one !!!!

how do...got the "ole" 25/06 back from h & r today !! 23 days turn around !! anyway the invoice says catch-heat-treat...she locks up tight now...so i will see....

Sweeeeeeet....Now scope it..and go shoot it and let us know how it does...Also...Don't forget to clean out the ejector/extractor and make sure the chamber and latch shelf is dry and oil free...before heading to the range..

will do...i just have to figure out the scope siuation...i bought a 22-250 handi & mounted the 3x9 off the 25/06 to develop loads for the 250...because i thought the repair on the 25/06 might take longer.."oh-well"
