Call me cheap, but how do I install a sling swivel?  I can locate them on the stock well enough it looks like, but my concern is drilling at 90 angle to the stock.  Do I just need to pony up and bug a installation jig?  Surely there is a non-redneck way to do this.  I thought about predrilling some scrap 2x4 to use as guide.

Do you know anyone with a drill press?  Thats what I us when exact perfection is a concern as you can clamp the stock and tilt the base to the exact angle, good luck but do it right nothing looks worse than a stock screw off centered on the stock :D  JIM

I thought about "freehanding" it and just laughed at myself.  I will use a bungee cord before that.  Detective Callahan said it best, "a man's just got to know his limitations."

I use a drill press and level. A small machinist square and a set of calipers helps with centering. I've not found a jig I like..

Thanks, Gunnut.  I will shop around.  It will wait and I don't want to screw up this new stock.  I got a 670 stock to go on my cheapo Black Shadow Model 70.  Sold the synthetic on Ebay and broke even.  The 670 stock looks great with the matte (unpolished) finish of the Black Shadow metal.  Judging by the quality of the recoil pad and the lack of sling swivels, Winchester was cutting corners long before their WalMart special Black Shadows.  In any event, this M70 was a great bargain.  The action isn't as slick as the M700, but I like better....don't know why.

If the absolute worst happens and you screw up, go to the Gunparts website and order some of the rubber plugs they sell and plug the hole.  Sanded to contour with the stock they don't look so bad.  I plugged an extra hole I put in a forarm for a swivel stud for a bipod to mount to and ended up plugging it later, looks kinds sharp.
If life is a beach, why am I so crabby?
