What's the latest on a new cartridge for our troops?
« on: August 11, 2006, 03:33:06 PM »
I realize that this isn't a military surplus question but I didn't know where else to ask it and if anybody knows the answer it is you good folks.  What is the latest on the idea of dumping the .223 for the 6.8 Rem SPC or 6.5 Grendel or something else?  I sure hope that those making the decisions don't let money issues keep us from giving our troops the best.  I do have to say that the Grendel sure looks impressive.

Blessings!

What's the status? The same as it's always been a completely engeneered hokey story ginned up by the gun rags to help one of thier larger advertisers sell more guns and ammunition. That at this point has appeared to have completely backfired. Serves em right!

Seriously the military has never even remotely began to consider changing service cartriges. In fact my prediction is that 5.56 will be the last cartrige our military adopts. There are some very promising technoliges just on the horizon that may very well render projectile firing weapons obsolete or at the very least the conventonal notion of what constitutes ammunition.

The 6.8 is a fantasy of someone as far as true military service goes? There have been some grumblings in the military, but only from the people who actually have to fight the wars, Not from those who make decisions ! It will be a long time, if ever if the P.O.S. M-16 gets replaced.
The United States is so far behind other countries in small arms developmet that it is a JOKE !
The Chinese have just began issuing weapons that are so far ahead of the M-16 , As to make our weapons look primitive. If the Chinese have them, The North Koreans also have them ! Even some of the small arms coming out of the Old Soviet countries are far more advanced than ours! The U.S. has relied on Technological weapons (smart Bombs, Cruise missiles etc.) for so long that keep our soldiers from going into battle, That when they do have to actually hit the ground, they are woefully ill-equipped. Wait till November and the Democrats get power again, The situation will get even worse when what money is spent for weapons development gets cut even worse !
I think the days of the U.S. being the formost superpower on earth are over, If they desired,
I think China could have most of the world speaking Chinese pretty much whenever they wanted.
Don't get me wrong, We have some great soldiers ! They just do not get the support and
equipment that they so deserve! In all fairness, The Republicans have not got a great track record on
keeping our soldiers well equipped either !

I think your mistaken about the Chinese, although they have a larger army, they lack the ability to tranwport them to any place off the Asian landmass.
If I was in charge the .260 Remington would be the standard military cartridge, with a 129 grain bullet at roughly 2900 fps, it'd make mincemeat of any body armor.
The 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 Rem, both lack the necessary velocity and bullet weight to really be a penetrating round.

At this time, we don't really know what all the Chinese have.
They do have heavy transport aircraft, and Transport ships
too. Watch what happens in Venesuela in the next couple of years.
Chinese military bases there? You betcha' Ground already broken for them?
We think so!  Chinese troops are already in the canal area of panama.
Who needs to move massive numbers of toops when you can trickle
them in a few at a time. Venesuela is a large exporter of oil
and They are about to invite the fox into the henhouse so to speak.
Watch how quickly Venesuela's foreign policy changes when they
jump into bed with China.
