Very unhappy with my Rem. 750
« on: August 11, 2006, 05:36:50 PM »
Went to the range with my new 750   30-06 and a box of Federal 150's and a box of Winchester PP 150's I put a new Nikon Pro-staff scope on it and was really hoping for good things.
However, much to my suprise I could't get it zeroed 2" high at 100 yds. It looked more like shotgun patterns than groups. It seemmed every time I moved the scope a click it the pattern would jump 3-4 inches up and down or left and rightl So what to do ? I usually shoot the rifle, forend on one of those little bi-pods and a sand bag under the butt. But it seemed to have a lot of barrel jump at the shot. So maybe I should hold the forend down when shooting ?
My wife is not happy as I spent 75 bucks on different kinds of ammo after the shooting . So if I get another decent day, I will try again. I'm very disappointed as I had waited so long to get this rig.
I just don't know what to do :'(
As a side note I also shot a new Stevens 200 in .243 with a Simmons Master series scope, I shot 100 grn federals and 3 different kinds of 100 grn reloads, Nosler Ballistic tip. 100 grn Hornady and 100 grain sierra. I got the same results. Patterns not groups ! :'(  So right now I've got two new rifles I don't trust to hunt with.
I will give them one more chance and then taloss and get rid of both rigs and start over. (If I can afford it)

Since it happened with both rifles maybe you were just having a bad day! :)

Country Boy,
Two new gun rigs that are bad? Can you be that unlucky? I hope not. Please look over the scope mounts for screw tightness, the scope rings for the same and examine the action screws on the rifles for such. The other thing could be the bench rest mechanism you are using. A rolled jacket does not provide the shot to shot stability you get from sand bags. Perhaps your rifle rest has a loose locking ring on the platform thread. Been there with all these variables. Hopefully you can say no to some of these things and check the others and perhaps find the answer. If it turns out to be the gun rigs (two bad scopes would be my first guess), save your money and don't buy lottery tickets. Good luck.

Hi, I had same exprience with Remington model 700, it should be scope--not gun. I changed the scope and it is working.. I think you should try use different scope.

Targshooter and stump sitter.  Targ., I finally got over being mad enought to pick up the remington and clean it. The forend was very wobbly. I didn't notice this during the shooting but it was very evident. So I tightened it down but the wood along the left side of the forearm is hard aganist the bbl.the point where the bbl. meets the forearm has a larger gap on the right side and is touching on the left after tighting. I then checked all the scope screws. They were sungged tight but not turned down to where they could no longer move. So I tightened them a little more without striping them.
Next the Stevens 200. I found the action scres not completely tight. I could turn the front screw about 3/4 turn and the middle screw tuo full terns. Then checked the scope ring screws and each could be turned about 1/2 turn more. Now the scopes, although not top of the line have good reviews from others. They are new right out of the box. Then I cleaned the powder resude in the bbls.
Oh, my wife and I went to the creek and found some fine sand to make 5 good sand bags, they don't shift.
So I'm now ready to try it again. However if they don't work this time, I'm going to send them down the river. I had already sent both to the factory to be checked over and were returned with some very nice groups shot from these rifles. I was expecting good this.
If I get a decent day next week I will try them again. I'm not the worst shot in the world and I can shoot far better than 6-8" groups on my worst day.
I sincerely appreciate you guys trying to help. I will keep you posted. :-[

Had the same problem with my 7600 and finally got disgusted and went home.  Found scope mounts bolts loose.  Tighten them all up and now shoot 1 to 1.25" groups.  Taught me a good lesson to check bolts every once in a while.

There is a site on the Internet that will accurize any Rem 740, so they should be able to do yours as well. They guarantee sub MOA.

I found my 7600 in 35 Whelen would not shoot decently to save my life until I went to Woodleigh 250 grain Weldcore Soft Points. I tried all sorts of ammo - Grand Slams, Swifts, Noslers, factory stuff. All was horrible. I had Superior Ammo load up some Woodleighs and I get groups where all the holes touch. Complete turn around.

Ain't cheap, though.

1st..

the forearms are almost always a tad wobbly on remington autos.

it sounds..much like bad scope mounting..or flinching.

we have 4 742/7400 30-06's in the family and all of them are close to OR at MOA guns with the right ammo..
we have found that old school 180 winchester silvertips ( not the ballistic tips) shoot very consistant.

my gun with a 1.5X 4.5 elite 3000 shoots 1 ragged hole at 100 yards.

we have never had jams with the exception of a bad batch of ammo in 180 power point ammo.

good luck in fixing your problem.

Thanks for asking, but I haven't had any luck at all. My son's 7400  shoots just fine. I've had many model 7400, modl 4"s etc.  most were acceptable shooters. but this 750 is an exception.
I often wonder why people call them "Jam o matics"  I've been shooting semi's for over 40 yrs and never had one jam or fail to feed. I've had a few tack drivers too. I just didn't get lucky on this one. Every Bar I've had has had good accuracy. I've still got two. So I guess I will relucently send this one down the road, even thought I like the fit and feel of the Remington better than the Bar.

I would have two others plus yourself shoot groups at 100 yards with the gun with Remington ammunition.  Then send the targets and gun to remington before I would get rid of it. I have seen a few negative posts on this gun and now will not buy one, Remington may be aware that they do not want bad press and try to help??  If you like the way if shoulders, you should try the factory first.

Jimmy, I've had it to the factory, the forarm was cracked and wood didn't match. The repaired and test fired it 1.4 but I don't know what weight bullet. Another scession at the range and same results. I also had my kid's 7400 06 and it shot just fine. Had not been  fired  or cleaned since last November. It's funny buthe new 750 with its pad seemed to kick more than the 7400 without one ? and I was just shooting in a t shirt !

I'm trading it for a Browning.

I assume you tried different bullet weights and brands.... You may have started out with the exact load that thing hates the most.

Try a Bar, Blr or A-bolt. My Blr(with steel reciever) is an honest tack driver, The other two are also great shooters.   shooters  I love those Remingtons ,fit feel and finish, but I've had ver few that shoot worth a crap. I did get lucky on one I bought on Auction arms lm 270. It shot like a target rifle T Then the boy up and sold it to take a girl on vacation with him. Just not old enough to appreciate a good rifle. I guess his pistol was more important !

I had jamming problems with my 750 which was fixed by grinding off the protruding scope base screws which were being impacted by the breach-block and smoothing up the hammer a bit. I switched from IMR 4064 to 4895 and employed small base dies---------------------------------Problem solved!!!!!!

Good Luck with your efforts.

I bought my son's 7400, it shoots fine for me 3 shot 1". Got rid of the both the savage and the 750 and bought an a bolt hunter, shoots fine 1/4-1/2"  groups the 7400 will shoot '1.4 or less (30-06) which is good for a semi. Bur my Bar shoots even better if you can believe it.  I think I've finally can sleep at night know I have a couple of reliable rifles for deer. My old blr .358 is very reliable one ragged hole at 100 yds, I only use it for bear and hogs.
