How many PDR is my cannon?
« on: August 12, 2006, 07:43:52 AM »
Been going through Gibbon's a looking at stuff and found this.

In the U.S. Muzzleloading Artillery were designated by the weight of a solid iron shot for the bore diameter of the gun.

Gibbon offers this method of determining the weight of a solid iron shot.

Quote
To find the weight of a cast -iron shot of any diameter, multiply the cube of its diameter in
inches by 0.134. The result will be the weight in pounds.

I have to find a print copy of Gibbons!!!

The easiest way to find out, in this day of the internet, is to click here and fill in the blank.

I think if you go back and read that description real carefully on abebooks you will find the $35 copy is a DVD.  Books start at $70.   www.abebooks.com is my favorite online shopping place. ;D ;D

Actually the $30 book is smoak damged, the CD not DVD is $37.

If you Query just  "ARTILLERIST'S MANUAL" in Abebooks you will come up with a couple of more.

Douglas asked for it and I thought he was going to stick it in the Reference section but he hasn't.

That's because you are computer programmer George and you made the linklook  like the link to unsuscribe in a SPAM  email, hidden. It didn't look like a link to a cannon ball weight page it looked like the word here underlined and took me five minutes find.

Besides CW has the Reference Section.

I picked up a reprint of Gibbon’s on ebay a few months ago. It is a good text much easer to use when you can flip thought it.  I also have an e-book copy that I downloaded from here  (It is a big file).
