A question about HS-7
« on: August 12, 2006, 04:16:07 PM »
I've picked up what is probably the last 1# container of HS-7 on the planet and I'm looking at the loads on the lable.  They are as follows: 1.) 45 Colt, 14.0 gr., 250 gr. JHP, 900 fps, 2.)44 Rem. Mag., 16.5 gr., 240 gr. JHP, 1400 fps., and 3.) 10 mm Auto, 9.3 gr., 200 gr. FMJ, 1100 fps.  Now, looking at those powder weights and the bullets they are pushing, does it not seem very excessive that 19.8 gr. of powder would push a 300 gr. JSP in a 454 Casull and do it safely?  That last load came off of Handloads.com.  If anybody here has experience with HS-7 please speak up and let me know what you think.  I've put off making that load untill I get more information.

Short answer is yes, long answer is whaddayawannadothatfor?
HS-7 is a good powder, just not very good for large cap/hi-pressure cases, or more correctly unless you don't have other powder available you can put the hs-7 to better use than the .454Cas. I have not used it in the past so I can't speak directly from its use, but it does seem that a load of 19.8g with a 300g bullet will be well within the safe limits.

I can't find a HS7 recommended load in any of my books - My Hodgdon book lists only H110 for all loads and the Speer lists the fastest powder as AA9. Their website doesn't have loads listed but they do have a light load with HS6. If you have a reliable source for loads on it go ahead and use it but the powder is too fast to be considered any where near optimum for that cartridge.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.
