A question about .223 twist and serial numbers
« on: August 13, 2006, 08:47:58 AM »
I would search for this but I cant get the search function to work.  I was wondering when exactly did NEF go with the 1:9 twist on 223 barrels and what serial numbers correspond with this change.  I am interested in shooting heavier .223 bullets in the 60-70 grain weight category.

What was the twist rate on the older .223 barrels?

It's in the FAQ and Help sticky. ;) There's no cut off by serial number, even H&R doesn't know, other than the 2006 fluted barrels are 1:9", early 2005 were still 1:12". The only sure way is to check with a tight patch and jag.

Anybody that has a 223 with a 1-12" twist should be very happy. The 223 is a 250 yard varmint rifle and shoots well with the lighter bullets. Why introduce a rainbow trajectory with heavy slugs that are better suited for a 6mm.

Smoke the varmints with high speed light bullets and flat  trajectory path.

I'm with Fred on that one. 35gr pills at 3650fps out of my handi and they hold about 3.5" at 300 yards. Watch the whistle pig go boom!

Yah Greg that is the way to do it. I shoot 55gr V-max bullets in my 6mm x47 (222Rem Mag case) at 3500 ft is is almost the same case as a 223, fast and vicious on varmints. This rifle used to be a 223 but did not shoot to my liking so I had it rebored.

Xhare I have one with teh 1:9 twist and it does not like the heavy bullets.  Shoots 45 grs better than any.  Like was mentioned above if you want heavier bullets go to the 6mm family. MY2cents.
