Which powder for 40 S&W?
« on: August 13, 2006, 09:40:07 AM »
Hey friends, I'm going to be reloading this cartridge regularly pretty soon now.  What I would like to know is which powder is most popular for this cartridge and 165gr. bullets?  The pistol will be a SIG P239 if that helps.  I was thinking there has to be a widely preferred powder, much like how W231 is to the 45 ACP.  Any suggestions?  Thanks again.

You won't go wrong with Win 231. I've seen a lot of loads published for it and it seems to be a popular choice for the .40. I don't know whether it's a best powder, though.

Thanks Questor, I was actually thinking it might not be a bad idea to start with that powder; it performs very well in my 45 ACP.

Alright all you 40 S&W reloaders, you need to stop hidin' out there.

I use Universal and Power Pistol w/165 gr. jhp in my Sig Pro 2340.Never had problems with either. Both perform better than I can hold the pistol  ;D.Shot about 450 rounds Sunday at range thru my Sig.Man, I love the .40.........Rick

Rick, I know what you mean.  I just finished depriming/resizing some more this evening, and its starting to grow on me.....WAIT!!! I don't want nothin' growin' on me!!!  ;)  I almost look at the 40 S&W as a "little 45," at least speaking for compact semi-autos.  In a full size pistol, I would always prefer the 45 ACP; just the way I am.  I'm still waiting on the bullets to come for reloading the .40, but I got some new loads for my 45 ACP I'm itching to try out.  I'm experimenting (loose term I used in place of "testing out loads") with my left-over 250gr. Oregon Trail Laser Cast bullets; heh, at least playing with those will help pass the time.

Did you by chance chronograph those rounds out of your pistol, or at least the loads you are sticking with?

I am currently loading 150gr Nosler JHP's for my CZ 75B in a 40 S&W. I am using Titegroup for these rounds. I like it because it is clean and pretty accurate in my pistol. I am planning to purchase a box of 165gr bullets (from somebody) I will use the Titegroup with the 165rs as well. I love my CZ 75B.
