NEWFOUNDLAND MOOSE HUNT

MY friend and I are headed to Newfoundland in October for a moose hunt. Anyone been there and can give any suggestions?

i have never been there myself but i here the island has alot of moose there.  from what i understand, it never used to have moose on the island but a couple swam over then just bred from there and now they have a very healthy population.

Hi,

Just happened on your post.  I've been to Newfi and hunted the big three , moose, bear and caribou.  Got a great moose, passed on several mediocre caribou and would not shoot the bear (seems there was a cash trophy fee that they neglected to tell me about until I was contemplating the trigger squeeze - no matter - I've shot a couple of bears before.)

Here are my impressions.  Camps can be good to misrable.  The outfitter I used had 2 camps, One really nice, and mine...a pit.  Dirty and not well kept.  Alos, I asked about specific thinks like where the potable watercomes from (contact lens care issues).  I was told hot showers by propane heaters, etc, etc.  None of this was true.  The guides were former fishermen, nice guys, but, moose hunting was a meat sport and any animal was fair game.  No one could judge trophy and they use points as a measure for both moose and caribou.  They have no appreciation for spread and height and shovels, etc.  In my cam, they told me that there might be different prices for antler spread...right...seems the outfitter didn't know about this tradition either. 

Your equipment will be much better than your guides.  I wish I brought my spotting scope.  I've never been on a big game hunt where the guide didn't have one...except newfi.  Bring 10x binos...lots of glassing.  bring 2 sets of light to medium weight rain gear and don't get too hung up on cammo.  Any dark green or blue coated nylon will be just fine...and bib type seems to work great.  By the third day, everthing will be wet or damp and you'll need something dry.  Bring 2 pair of knee length rubber boots if you can (Cabellas has them) and replace the cotton laces with nylon imediately.  The acidic water in bogs will eat your laces in 2 days.  Pack light clothes and use polarfleece, it drys quicklky. 

If you'll help lug the moose back, the guide will be more prone to hunt harder for a bigger animal.  Bringa lite sleeping bag and a pillow of some kind (I used a clean tshirt filles with other clean tee shirts)....the linens LOL were so dirty...

That's all I can think of right now.  Compared to other hunts I've been on, I'd say it was a 6 out of 10, but, I'd go to newfi again....to another outfitter.

Hey J,

Sorry for the misspellings.  The site didn't respond when I posted...but..eveidentally it did.

I went to caribou valley outfitters out of deer lake.  The hunting area was the buckans plateau...central nf i think.  We flew to halifax from boston and then to deer lake.  From there it was a 45min float plane ride to the camp.  He has 2 camps...ours (my buddy Ed and I) and another larger camp where there were 4 hunters.  All six of us got game moose.  I was the only one who did not shoot a caribou, my decision.  Driving from boston wasn't worth the effort and shipping meat wasn't prohibitive.

If I go again, I'll hunt with Don Stow of Silver Mountain Lodge; Mobile Outfitters.

I'm going with Lake Douglas outfitters near the same area. My friend wants to drive from Pa. I think it will be a long drive.  Good thing I just retired.

Hey Guys,
          My father in law and I want to go Moose hunting and I'm thinking that Newfoundland is the place to go.  How rugged is the terrain up there and would a guy with bad knees be alright on a hunt there?  We're out of Indiana so we would almost have to fly to make it worth our while.  We are thinking about the 2007 season if possible.  I have looked at Lake Douglas's website and I've e-mailed them about their 2007 season.  I'd love to hear how this hunt goes!  What kind shooting distances are we talking about with moose?  Under 200 yards?  I'd love to hear more about everyone's experience in Newfoundland.

TEDDY - We just got back from Lake Douglas. The accomadations and food was wonderful. We were very disappointed in the few number of animals we saw. The locals drive the roads and poach during the night so the numbers are down. I had to settle for a cow on the last Friday. I saw no bulls and my friend saw one the he couldn't get a shot at. The walking is bruital. The bogs are like walking on a wet sponge in which you sink from your ankles to your knees depending on where you step. We are going back but looking for a different outfitter. We were told all the other weeks were very successful. I don't know if that was true of it was the old- " YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY"excuse. My moose was shot at 220 yds. in the open bog.

Good info to know!  Thanks for sharing that!  220 yards is a good shot.  What caliber were you using and how did it act?  I've seen videos of guys hitting a moose 3 or 4 twice with a 300 win mag and the thing still walks around for a few minutes.

Sorry to hear that the hunt turned out less than expected.  Booking with an outfitter is pretty much a crap shoot.  One needs to really think if spending the kind of money one pays these days is worth the risk.  You really don't know what you are getting until you get there.  References, even from people you know can't be relied on fully.  An outfitter who had good hunts in the past may not be doing as good a job now.  So many outfitters overbook and pretty much shoot out there areas in a few short years.  I just love the poaching line he had as an excuse!  With hunting it always seems to be someone elses fault, doesn't it?

poaching is a real problem here in ontario, i wouldnt be surprised to find out that almost as many moose are poached as there are legal kills.

Teddy - I was using a .300 Wby. mag. with 180 gr. Barnes TSX bullets. I cheated alittle and used shooting sticks.  First shot was through the heart and the second broke the bone emediately under the shoulder. It shattered and dropped her on the spot.

Todd Wiseman (owner) and his staff run an excellent lodge! Now I will admit, I have not moose hunted there, but have hunted bear there twice. I do know of folks who have went moose and caribou hunting there before and they loved it also.

The staff works their butts off for every hunter. The food is delicious and lots of it.

If I could afford it, I would go every year.

My dad and I hunted in NF this past fall and both got bulls. The guides were good at putting us on moose, but didn't care about getting out all the meat. I carried as much as I could (about 75 pounds + antlers). We had to walk up and down 5 hills, and through constant bogs, for nearly 4 miles before we got to the boat that would take us across the lake to our cabin. I told the guide "I don't know what was better, shooting the moose, or finding the boat." My knee was swollen for a week after the hunt, but it was totally worth it. The only really bad part of the trip was not getting all the meat out. After we got home we were given a bill for the butchering. I received about 45 pounds of meat, and a bill of $195.00. Yes, it still hurts to sit down. A lesson learned. Focus on the memories your making and don't let the money cloud it.

wow the guide actually left meat to spoil?  not sure what the law is in Newfie land but in Ontario if he was caught he would be charged, the resort would be charged, and im not sure but they likey wouldve charged you as well.  guess game care is definately something thats needs to be watched when you select a hunt, hes not just risking his butt, but also yours.
