That's not surprising, since Mississippi changed their "primitive" season laws to include the Handi in calibers .38 and above as legal firearms, they've been in short supply, some have waited considerably longer than 60 days from suppliers.

May not be so stupid if there is a big demand, but I would call the factory to see if the dealer is being on the up and up with you.

The shortage of firearms or the MS primitve rules change? ???

Word around the campfire between Sports South and WalMart people that I talked to the Buffalo Classic has been 6 months for some people.  FWIW, you might want to clarify your opinion there, CPJ.

Sorry for the confusion. IMHO, classifying Handi Rifles as primative, is stupid. But I also think that inlines should only be used in regular firearms season.

I agree it's not what I'd call primitive, but their reasoning is to have more deer harvested to reduce the deer population which is quite a problem apparently. Their primitive rules are a joke compared to a lot of states, here, no optics, no jacketed bullets, open ignition, traditional percussion caps, no 209, etc.... ::)

This will only get off topic and go down hill fast, so this is my last post about this.  :) I can see their point in trying to thin the herd by allowing these "primitive" old handi's, but to that I say why not make the rifle season longer? The nice thing about our muzzleloader (aka primitive) is that there are not many people that hunt it, so the woods are alot less crowded. Thats one of the main reasons that I bow hunt.
Anyway Im done. Carry on. ;D
PS What did the present I sent you go on,  Tim?

It's on my .280 Ultra, and a fine addition it is!! I'll see if I can remember to take a pic of it tomorrow and post it.

Thanks,

Tim

Here in Missouri they have lengthened the deer season so much it hurts small game hunters.  Now you have a longer regular season, youth, urban, blackpowder and doe seasons ect..  Most small game hunters stay out of the woods during deer season and wouldn't dream of going anywhere near public land.  If there wasn't  a couple of bow only deer hunting conservation areas near my home I wouldn't have anywhere to run my Britt pup during much of the fall and early winter.  I do enjoy deer hunting but my season is over the first hour, I hunt private land and there are more deer then rabbits on it.

I hunt in Okla (Tulsa area) on public land and if I even see a deer I've had a good hunt. Last year I hunted several different WMAs and took the only deer I saw (9 pointer) and never saw another deer through the entire season, thats bow, primative & gun.

I have yet to get a shot at a deer further than 100 yards so I usually carry the lightest weight rifle for the job, my NEF 30-30 or my 30-06 Colt Lite rifle.
Will hunt for food.

I hope that I don't draw the wrath of the blackpowder crowd, but if a modern inline can shoot 250 grain bullet at 2000+ fps, is water-proof (more or less), carries a scope of my choice, and is firmly bedded in synthetic or laminate then...........it sounds like a modern gun to me and should be used in modern gun season.  Ahem, it is too easy.

Mattkc,

That's the problem.  The whole point of extending deer season is to lower the population to reduce deer vs car accidents. (Like it or not, the insurance companies are the ones pushing this through the government.)  With private land owners letting the population grow out of control, this defeats the purpose.  If private landowners don't start to regulate their own population the government will continue to lengthen the season...or worse.  If we don't take care of this problem, the government will call it a "safety threat" and step in and take care of it themselves. :o

I've hunted public land and private land. There is no overpopulation of deer on public land...that I can almost guarantee.

To get back on topic, let me add this:

When I went to buy my .357 Handi at our town's Scheel's All Sports, they told me that the factory was backordered and nobody had one to get.  The gun dept guy said "we're a big fish in this pond, so they'll take care of us first".  I waited for 4 weeks, and thought, this is BS!

I went somewhere else, and had one by the end of the week.  So much for the "big fish".

Call the factory, or shop around.
Just my Awf Hand comments...
