i was wondering if anyone could recommend a good mil rifle that is not expensive and can find ammo for it fairly easily and affordable besides an sks i was looking into a k31 or mosin 91/30 or yugo m48 any opinions would be appreciated and any other rifle choices would be appreciated thanks Terry

Any of the three that you are looking at would be a good choice.

If I couldn't get all three and had to select just one I would pick the K31. The K31 is an amazing piece of equipment for the money, ammunition is available and they are very accurate. If you reload it will use a .308 bullet which is readily available too. Some have stocks that dinged up, but a little steam applied to the dents, some scraping, sanding and linseed oil will make them look a lot better. If you reload just make sure that you buy ammunition with boxer primers so you can reload it.

I think the Yugo 98k is the best bang for the buck. Not exactly a famous piece of history, but I don't think I've seen one that wasn't well made. Me, I'm more of an Enfield fan.

EDIT: Oh yes, and 8mm and 303 ammo is always available at my local gun shows in great supply, and for cheaper than I could ever dream of matching with reloads.

Go with the K31 you will not be sorry. Second Choice would be a Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 Both are extremely accurate. The Swedes are harder to find unless you find one at a gun show and you will pay a premium price for them. Best Bang for the Buck guaranteed is the K 31 and chances are will be more accurate than a run of the mill mauser unless it is a Swede.

One of the 8mm Mausers would probably be the most economical to shoot.
The Swedish 6.5mm Mausers (Husy or Gustav) are probably the highest quality.
Anything Swiss is going to be very accurate.
The Nagants are probably the most robust...
303 British Enfields are the ugliest but Quite servicable
And you thought this would be a simple question?

I would have to disagree with you to some extent. I have 2 K31"s and neither of them has been as accurate as my K98 Mauser is. Of course there is always the exceptions. Here is the best group I have got with my K31 so far.

Talking about the exceptions, I have read about how good some peoples Mosin Nagants shoot but I have 4 of them, 1 M38, 1 M44 and 2 91/30's and couldn't get any of them to shoot worth a crap until I started handloading for them.

thanks all i have been looking at the k31 and can get one for about $150 with shipping and transfer or less will have to look at the other swede mauser and the k98 i have also seen the yugo 24/47 on a few websites may have to look at the enfields a bit i have a few website to look at thanks for the help it is appreciated Terry

Jack Nice group on the mauser but for every ten of them you have I bet 9 of them will not shoot that well. It looks like you have a exceptional one hang on to it. On the other hand that is probably an average group for a k31 and and the Swedes for the most part will shoot as well as your K98 will. I have had at 4 turks and none of them shot as good as your K98 does and one had a like brand new bore but it still shot only average. It was not scoped but I put a peep sight on it which should have made it shoot half way decent as the sights were better than stock sights.

When I bought mine I also picked one up for my oldest son also. His shoots just as good as mine. To be honest he doesn't shoot that well but he did with this one. The 2 Yugo 24/47's I have while not shooting as good as my K98 do shoot very good.

But I do agree that most K98's probably don't shoot as well as mine. The 4 M/N's that I have are less accurate than my Mauser's or my K31's. But with reloading they have become very capable deer rifles.

After shooting next to a cast bullet K31 shooter at the range for 2 weeks in a row, seeing him put round after round into the 9, 10 and X ring at 200yds with the original sights, then reading a couple threads on the K31 here, I had to have one.

Been looking at them online for the last couple weeks, checked several places locally, after calling all the Big 5s in the area, and talking to their managers, they didn't expect to get any more in from Century, it's been 2 months since they got any, the last store I called had one and after seeing it and how good it looked, I bought it.

A beechwood stocked rifle with a $180 price tag I might add, which is a bit more than I anticipated, has very little wear, no rust and the bluing is 90+%, bore looks new, although the stock near the butt plate is a little rough. Removed the butt plate and there was the label with the last Swiss GI's name and unit on it, kool!! Ordered 4 boxes of the boxer primed ammo from Grafs and a die set, looking forward to doing some shooting with it.

ok i would like to know what you all think of an sks would it be a good rifle or would the k31 be a better deal as far as ammo and price i can get a k31 special select grade with the beechwood stock i beleive for $120 plus shipping which is like $18. the gaurdia is the same rifle was just wondering if anyone had shot one thanks all for the help i am also looking at a hi point 9mm carbine if anyone has an opinion on those to or any other hi point firearms thanks again Terry

Here is my Hi Point carbine. It is a lot of fun to shoot and is more accurate than you would think. What exactly do you want this rifle that you want to do? I have 2 sks rifles and they are also fun to shoot and a lot of people deer hunt with them although they are definitely not my first choice.

If you ever decide to scope your K31 sometime I have the clamp on scope mount and I recommend it highly. It is very well made and sturdy and does not make any permanent alterations to your rifle. It only takes less than a minute to install or remove. Best thing is you can use your original sights also if you want. I shot my K31 today and did pretty good.

i think when i buy a mil rifle it will be a k31 i will let you know when that happens. the hi point i found a used one for $130 and was thinking about getting it for plinking and home defense mostly thanks for all the help guys you all are great help.

Jack, is that an aluminum or steel mount? Source?

It is aluminum, but very well made. There is also a drill and tap mount but I have absolutely no regrets getting the clamp on mount. I had a scout mount on my K31 but I don't like them very much.

Jack, what is it you didn't like about the S&K? Just the scout type scope mounting that lots of shooters have trouble getting used to or the mount itself?

Using the side mount seems it would be hard to use on the right side, I've used left mounted side mounts before, but never a right mounted scope, is it good for a right handed shooter?

I guess I just don't like scout mounts period. I don't know how exactly to explain it but I have had scout mounts on several of my rifles and now they are gone. I still have them, they just aren't on my rifles anymore.

I just don't see any advantage to them. If nothing else they seem to me to have drawbacks to them. Tell you what I'll do. If you pay the shipping I will let you try my Darrells mount to see if you like the scout mount before you pay big bucks for one.

The drill & tap scope mount sits the scope to the left side of the gun and the clamp on type sits the scope to the right side of the rifle. It is my understanding the clamp on mount sits the scope less to the right than the drill & tap mount sits the scope to the left.

I am right handed and I really like the clamp on mount. It doesn't move the scope that much to where it is a problem in my opinion. I stated in an earlier post that one of the benefits of using the clamp on mount is that you can still use the stock sights if you wish. I need to clarify that, you can use the stock sights but you can't raise the real leaf but a fraction.

So if you had a close up shot for example and your stock sights were hitting pretty much point of aim at say 30 or 40 yards it would work out good.

After checking my pistol scope, I don't think it will work too good because the eye relief is just too long for a good field of view, so I'll order the clamp on.
