Sporterized hawken hunter carbine
« on: August 18, 2006, 05:29:06 AM »
A friend of mine gave me one of these awhile back. Since this rifle has a 1-24 twist I was planning on using a heavy conical bullet. I was looking at a 410 grn minnie hollow based made by Black Jack Hill. He also makes a 400 grn solid based bullet. Does anybody have any experiance with either one of these bullets. Does anybody else shoot one of these rifles? What I am looking to do is make a hard hitting short range brush gun. Thanks in advance for any info. P.S. Also thinking of putting a set of fiber optic sights on it. My eyes aren't what they used to be. ;)

I did have 3 of em, one each for me, my son and my dad, great little rifles, I put Lyman 57SML sights on all of em, shot the lyman 457122 in a sabot real well as did the 400gr Harvester hardcast in sabots, both with Goex 2f. The locks are TC clones, but the mainsprings were a bit weak, so I replaced them with TC mainsprings. These were bought back when they were considerably less than they are now, dunno if they've made any changes, but they were great rifles for the money and had chrome lined bores which I don't think the new ones have.

That ought to be a ball to play with...I would also have to try the Hornady .451 300 grain XTP and the  300 grain Barnes copper bullet...They both also preform well...I believe they might prefer a little slower twist, but you can work with the powder charge and find out...
