Who makes the best AR type?
« on: August 18, 2006, 08:55:31 AM »
Hey Everyone,
I used to own a Colt AR-15 A2 type rifle.  It was a match target rifle and it was accurate.  I had to sell it and since then I have been wanting to replace it.  I would prefer to get an AR M4 type rifle in .308 actually because the larger bullet opens more doors for chances to use the rifle, but I'd still consider the good ole 223.  Just so we're comparing apples to apples keep the rifles we talk about under the $1000 price range.

How do you guys rate these manufactures:

Bushmaster
Colt
Rock River
Others....

I'm looking for accuracy, but also something I can kick around a little bit.  What do you all think?  Would I be better off the build one myself?

I don't know who makes the "best" AR type rifle. All I can say is that I have a RRA AR-15 TASC Rifle w/ mid length hand guard and absolutely love it. It's been rock solid so far!

I have little experience myself and am digging for info also.  I am definately shopping for an AR rifle!  I have talked to a gunsmith buddy of mine with lots of experience with the AR.  He says the Armalite, then Colt, then the Bushmaster are excellent, in that order.  The Armalite and Colt will cost you a little more.  I'm impressed with the carbon fiber Bushmasters and may opt for that.  I do expect around 1" accuracy at 100 yds though and will not settle for much less.

That's interesting,
I have always been told to remember abc armalite, bushmaster then colt. Not my words but have heard it from more than one person. I have a bushmaster and it is an excellent shooter. The only ftf I've ever had was when a primer came loose and got jammed in the locking lugs.

I'd like an M4 style with the A4 type flat top receiver.  I held a Bushmaster M4 tonight and it felt just right.  I know RRA gives a guarentee of accuracy on their website, but I don't know about bushmaster.  Bushmaster has soo many different types of muzzle breaks it makes my head spin trying to pick one out.  I held one tonight that was $999.  It's awfully tempting, but I want to make darn sure that I'll be getting 1" MOA at 100 or less for that kind of money, semi-auto or not.  Anyone here have any muzzle break preferences other than cosmetic ones?  Also is a bushmaster M4 easily capable of 1" accuracy at 100 yards?  I'm sure it won't with the wolf cheapo ammo, but I would hope for sub, MOA with my handloads.  Is that reasonable and realistic?

Colt and Bushmaster, in that order.  RRA would be acceptable.

Colt is a name........

RRA is very well made and my NM A4 223 will drill 1/2" at 100 all day long. A friend has a Bushmaster and there is a quality difference ....... Another has a Colt and it is equal to the Bushy.

I have the flattop that I mounted a 6-18 Leupold on for testing my reloads.  I got the mount from RRA and the price was great for a rock solid mount.

I am retired Army and I never had a M16 this tight.

This is the order I rate them........Bushmaster,Rock River then Colt.

You cant go wrong with any of them (Bushmaster,Rock River,Colt,ArmaLite) they are all excellent rifles.

If you want to step up to a .308 my first and only choice would be an ArmaLite AR-10.

My Bushmaster

Since I originally made the post last August I bought a Bushmaster A3 M4 6.8.  Oh my goodness do I love this rifle and caliber.  I have yet to use the 6.8 on game, but with factory SSA triple shocks I get three shot groups at 100 yards I can cover with my right thumb.  I could spend my whole life looks for a more accurate handload than that and never find it so I keep those rounds on the shelf in case I ever hunt with it and I reload for my practice ammo.  I honestly didn't think it would shoot so well for being a 16" carbine, but it does pretty good with the regular ammo too.  So far my bushmaster has had about 500 - 1000 rounds through it and I have been very happy with it.  I love my little rifle.
