A gun counter employee was trying to dissuade me from buying a Taurus revolver and steer me torward a S&W. One of the advantages he claimed was that the S&W had a much tighter cylinder lockup than the Taurus. Is this true? And if so, what problems might that pose down the road? I own a Smith and am very happy with it, but I'm looking for at buying a backwoods pack gun, and the Taurus Tracker Ti models seem to be pretty good values.

While S&W does make a nice gun, if you want a Taurus, buy a Taurus. It's your money, it will be your gun, get what you want. That said, I'd probably look at a Ruger for a backpack gun (no reason, just like Rugers), but you know what they say about opinions...

I've owned a Taurus Model 85, a Ruger Redhawk, a S&W 66 and 624.
You can't beat the Smith trigger out of the box. I have no complaints with any of these three brands but my favorites are the Smiths.

Hello,
Pick the one that FEELS right in your hand, and the one that meets YOUR criteria.

That said, each will have what feels best to one user, and not that way to another. Taurus revolvers don't fit well in MY hand, others do.

I jus returned from a BIG sports store and held the Taurus Ti and the Smiths that were available. The Smiths were all $150-200 more, but you sure can tell the difference in the action can't you. He had a SS 2" 686 for $399 that is a little heavier than I wanted, but it may be the one I walk away with.
